I was one of Brian Jones’ closest companions during @therollingstones’ rise, and few people witnessed Brian’s brilliance in the studio as closely as he did. Today, Brian is often remembered mainly for his tragic decline - a narrative that can obscure just how essential he was to the band’s identity. In reality, Brian was a meticulous perfectionist and a wildly imaginative multi-instrumentalist who transformed @mickjagger and @officialkeef’s early songs into something far more vivid. Though an exceptional guitarist, he frequently reached beyond the guitar when inspiration struck, pulling in sitar, dulcimer, recorder, marimba, and anything else that could spark new colours and moods. Those choices weren’t gimmicks; they were the textures that helped define the Stones’ most adventurous mid-‘60s recordings. Far from being a marginal figure, Brian was a creative force who expanded the emotional and sonic landscape of the band, often in ways they may never have envisioned themselves. In this clip from episode 4 of Lip Service, I recall what it was like to watch Brian shape a song from inside the studio.
