📢 Call for discussion papers: Revision of ISPM 12 (Phytosanitary certificates)
The IPPC Secretariat invites the plant health community to contribute to the revision of ISPM 12, a key global standard supporting the safe trade of plants and plant products. 🌱
ISPM 12 sets the rules for issuing phytosanitary certificates, official documents that ensure plants and plant products are pest-free and meet import requirements.
Why this revision matters:
✅ Make the standard easier to use
✅ Reflect current operational practices of NPPOs
✅ Harmonize paper and electronic certificates
✅ Provide clearer guidance (e.g. inspection dates)
✅ Clarify complex cases like re-export and partial shipments
📅 Deadline: Monday 14 September 2026
Your contributions will help make global trade smoother, safer and more transparent. 🌍
The Expert Working Group will review submissions in October in Athens, Greece.

📢 Fact or Fiction: Pest surveillance
🟢 What is pest surveillance?
An official process whereby information on pests in an area is obtained through various non-official, official sources such as surveys or a combination of both.
Pest surveillance is a cornerstone of Integrated Pest Management and is critical for safeguarding plant health and agricultural systems.
❌ Myth: Monitoring is just about walking the fields and looking for pests.
✅ Fact: Visual inspection is only one component of an effective surveillance system. Modern approaches combine field observations with traps, data analysis and other tools to detect pests early, even before visible symptoms appear.
💡 Why it matters!
Science-based surveillance supports informed decision-making, helps prevent pest outbreaks and reduces resource wastage.
