EFSA has launched a public consultation on its draft guidance document on the risk assessment of plant protection products and bees, covering honey bees, bumble bees and solitary bees.
EFSA is responding to a request from the European Commission to review the guidance document, first published in 2013, considering new scientific knowledge that has emerged in the meantime.
Comments are particularly invited on the novel approaches included in the draft guidance, which regard the risk assessment and the statistical analysis of field studies.
The consultation will run for 12 weeks to allow for maximum participation among interested parties. EFSA has consulted stakeholders and Member States on key aspects of the guidance update at various stages of the review process.
Interested parties are invited to submit comments on the draft document and its supplementary information via the dedicated consultation pages. The deadline for comments is 3 October 2022.

EFSA’s new Management Board is operational as of today, 1 July 2022. It comprises representatives of all EU Member States, the European Commission, and the European Parliament, as well as representatives of civil society and food chain interests.
“In an international context where food safety and food security are interlinked, it is significant that EFSA’s Management Board now includes a wide scope of representatives to help ensure an effective functioning of the food chain”, said Claire Bury, DG SANTE’s Deputy Director for Food Sustainability.
The previous structure of the Board consisted of 14 members with expertise relating to the food chain who did not represent a government, organisation or sector, plus a representative of the European Commission.
In the new governance model, Member States, the European Parliament, the European Commission, civil society and those representing food chain interests, will be represented in EFSA’s Management Board.
The new model responds to the requirements of the Transparency Regulation, which entered into force in 2019 and increased the role of Member States as well as the engagement of all parties involved with the work of EFSA.

What’s the difference between a ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ date on my food labels? Are there food hygiene rules I should stick to at home to keep my family safe? Should I be concerned about food additives? These are some of the questions asked by European consumers that the campaign has been answering by translating the science behind EU food safety. Building on a successful first phase, a second year of the campaign has been launched to cover a range of new topics.
Helping consumers to make informed decisions about everyday food choices is what the campaign is all about. The EU-wide campaign offers practical and accessible information to consumers to use when they buy and consume food - from helping to read labels and understand additives, to providing advice on food preparation and storage. Launched on 16th May, the second year of the campaign builds on the first by expanding the range of topics consumers can learn about, with plant health, novel foods, and food supplements newly added to the mix.
EFSA’s Executive Director, Bernhard Url, welcomed the launch of the campaign: “Consumers in the EU can be fully confident that the food they put on their tables is safe. They can trust the EU food safety system and the scientific knowledge at its foundation, which has been helping to ensure our food is safe for 20 years now. is an important example of our partnership with national food safety authorities, and our cooperation with consumer organisations, food producers and civil society."
Primarily targeting 25 to 45-year-old European citizens, the campaign will also explain EFSA’s role in contributing to European legislation that protects consumers and the entire food chain.
An toolkit including visuals, short films and social media posts in different languages is available on the campaign website, making it easy for national authorities and associations to get involved in the campaign.
