Obey Giant

This Nouveau Angel print is inspired by my love of Art Nouveau design and symbolism. Art Nouveau explored a counter-narrative to industrialization in which harmony with nature and a respect for its untamable aspects were spiritually embodied by floral and female forms. Of course, angels symbolize guidance and protection, so the themes of Art Nouveau combined with my belief that women are leaders in the building of a more peaceful and just society led me directly to this combination of style and subject matter. Let your better angels guide you to help peace and justice bloom!

I was saddened to hear of the passing of David Hockney, one of the most amazing artists of the last 65 years. Despite being British, Hockney’s iconic paintings of pools practically define the leisure life aesthetic of California. Those iconic paintings are both graphic and lush with a sense of tranquility but with something possibly happening just outside the frame. Of course, Hockney tackled many subjects with exquisite style and cool theory, continuing to evolve and experiment throughout his long career. My wife Amanda and I were able to meet David in 2018 at Gemini in LA and he couldn’t have been more charming. Thanks for all of the beautiful work David!

This image serves as a reminder that pushing for, and maintaining peace, ironically, requires a militant vigilance. I love the juxtaposition of seemingly contradictory symbols. Peace is victory without war. To paraphrase Ice Cube…it’s a good day when you don’t have to use your A.K.! – Shepard

Lost & Found is a series of releases pulling from the archives of Obey Giant Art. This week, we are excited to announce the release of a number of prints that were originally released in 2008: LA Philharmonic Hall. The print features an image of one of Los Angeles’ most famous landmarks, the Walt Disney Concert Hall, which was designed by world renowned architect Frank Gehry.

In honor of conductor Gustavo Dudamel’s upcoming finale concert at the Walt Disney Concert Hall, a limited number of these prints will be available on Thursday, June 4th at 10 AM PT in the Obey Giant Store.
