Mio fratello GC credeva nella vita oltre la morte. Ho provato ad abbracciare la sua idea, immaginando il canto d’angeli che lo ha accolto alla fine del viaggio. Quel canto è divenuto “GC Mirage (The Loss of Memories)”.

Cosa resta quando una persona amata se ne va? Svaniscono i ricordi condivisi, certo, la parte di noi che apparteneva a una storia comune diviene polvere impigliata nei capelli del tempo. Chi piange, piange sempre e solo per se stesso, amo però pensare che ci sia qualcosa oltre il dolore, forse persino un dono: quando una persona ci lascia non appartiene più a un solo luogo, non è più distante, diventa parte di ciò che ci circonda; questo ci consente di restargli accanto.

My brother GC believed in life after death. Upon his passing, as if to walk beside him, I tried to embrace his vision, imagining a song of angels, rising as he crossed into heaven's light. That song became “GC Mirage”.

What are we left with, when a dear one leaves us? Shared memories fade, of course. The part of us that once belonged to that common story turns to dust, and tangles in the hair of time. I believe that whoever weeps, weeps for nobody but themselves, yet I like to think there must be something beyond pain, perhaps even a gift: once a person is gone, they’re no longer in one place, no longer truly away from us: they become everywhere, thus always by our side.

“GC Mirage” is a piano piece that blends classical and gospel music, capturing the dual loss of a brother and the inevitable fading of shared memories.

Thanks to Piano City for the invitation and Alberto Napolitano Pianoforti for the organisation (it was truly moving to return to their showroom thirty years after buying my first piano there : same magical atmosphere, same grace).

A special thanks to Mariella for the sketch she drew during the concert (and kindly gifted me). As you can see at the end of this reel, my recital “7 Sketches of Loss” gained one more on this occasion. 🙏❤️

Sabato suonerò a Piano City Napoli. Un concerto per pianoforte solo, tra Bill Evans, Chick Corea, Lyle Mays, Michel Camilo, Eric Clapton ed Elton John. Poi, molto più indietro, ci sarò io, e il mio tentativo di intrecciare la loro musica alla mia.

Per me la musica improvvisata è sempre stata un'esperienza onirica. Dal silenzio a qualcosa, senza sapere dove quel "qualcosa" avrà inizio, come si dipanerà, quando terminerà.

Mani che vagano libere, modulano in altre tonalità, dilatano le battute, tessono ostinati, contrappunti. Una forma di esecuzione per libera associazione. Nessun recinto, nessuna barriera.

Provo a farlo in questa serie di variazioni sui temi del mio album , spiccando un salto nel vuoto, sperando di precipitare in un sogno.

Il prossimo brano di Seven Sketches of Loss "GC Mirage", è stato appena presentato a e sarà pubblicato a breve.

Improvised music has always been a dreamlike experience to me. From silence to something, without knowing where that “something” will begin, how it’ll unfold, when it’ll end.

Hands that wander freely, modulating into other keys, shifting time signatures, extending bars, establishing ostinatos, weaving counterpoints. No fences, no barriers.

In this series of variations on my album I try to do just that: break free from time signatures and harmony, leap off a cliff, hoping to fall into a dream.

Seven Sketches of Loss is being released as singles. The next track “GC Mirage” was just presented at and will be released in a few weeks.

I hope it will find a place in your dreams too ✨🎶
