"There are beautiful souls who don't go away even when they disappear. They leave traces, memories, images, maybe a piece of paper with some illuminating notes. In music this happens frequently and we must be grateful for the privilege of being able to have at our disposal, hopefully indefinitely, works of immeasurable value that force us to remain human. The background to this meeting between double bass player Giovanni Maier and Alexander Hawkins' piano is a juicy 2013 album, "Two For Joyce" (Long Song), in which Maier had Keith Tippett as a partner, a duet that was already ready to be repeated in the spring of 2020. First Covid and then fate decided otherwise. To process the mourning of Tippett's passing, Maier thought of trying new paths with Hawkins, because that's what it's all about. No obvious homages and no themes of the English master taken up again without much inspiration. Much better to launch into new free-flying adventures, as Tippett's best lesson was. Compared to his illustrious compatriot, Hawkins's approach to the instrument is on the other hand divergent, because he lives in a fragmented and precarious era, which devours and then spits out sounds of every kind. All this inevitably pervades his keyboard, between percussive sounds, abstractions, semblances of melodic figurations, forward leaps and lateral swerves, silences, phrasings from the history of jazz and futuristic hypotheses.
The great thing is that Maier is not impressed, he is there glued to the eruption of ideas of the young man, a safe anchor but also a proactive light in many moments. Tippett will get a bit of healthy envy"
