A few companies have experimented with using Geiger counters as random trigger sources for synthesizers. It's an interesting idea, but Geiger counters only provide quantitative information: they count radiation events without revealing anything about their nature.
Gamma spectroscopy goes much further. Instead of simply counting gamma rays, it measures the energy of every detected photon. Gamma rays are extremely high-energy photons and, just like visible light, different energies correspond to different frequencies. Spectrometers typically accumulate these measurements over time to produce an energy spectrum, allowing physicists to identify radioactive isotopes by their characteristic signatures.
Until a few years ago, gamma spectroscopy was expensive and portable instruments were prohibitively costly. Today, that has changed. RadiaCode has made high-quality portable gamma spectroscopy remarkably accessible.
I've spent the last nine years studying and working with ionizing radiation detection, and I'm now preparing what may be the most advanced nuclear-physics-based musical instrument ever created.
The Quantum MIDI Generator uses a RadiaCode spectrometer to transform real-time X-ray and gamma-ray spectral data into MIDI information. No radioactive source is required: the scintillation detector is sensitive enough to operate continuously using the natural background radiation that surrounds us.
This means you're not just getting random triggers. Every note is related to the energy of an actual detected particle. The result is not merely a stochastic event generator, but a fully-fledged quantum MIDI sequencer featuring 25 musical archetypes, custom scales, and multiple mapping strategies.
Best of all, it will run on any operating system capable of running Python, and it will be completely free.
Curious to hear your modular system, synthesizer, or virtual instruments perform a duet with the invisible radiation constantly passing through our world? ☢️
Stay tuned.

Keep an eye on the website in the following days because something special is coming.
An album in the form of software. 大雨 — Ooame / Haiku is a work of generative music that builds its own sound from nothing each time you open it, and never plays the same way twice — a record that exists only while it is playing.
