Emmanuelle Castellan’s works are distinguished by incisive, sharp-edged gestures capable of defining suspended presences, caught in sidelong glances or immersed in shadowy atmospheres, like fragments of thought translated into painting.

“Painting allows me to create abstract narratives, composed of silhouettes, ghostly presences and landscapes, but also to work with a medium that is so present in its own right. What interests me above all in painting is the relationship between gestures, bodies and frames; between the initial intention and all the stages that ultimately bring an image or a presence to life. I do not see my practice as linear, even though I have my habits, but rather as a slow journey that trains me to look at the images that surround me and that form part of my culture and my history.” - Emmanuelle Castellan

We are happy to share with you some installation views from “Figure, not Figure”, a project bringing together the works of four contemporary painters: Emmanuelle Castellan, Scott McCracken, Mirela Moscu and Luca Zarattini.

“The shortest distance between two points is a straight line. In painting, it is not” : the project stems from this formal yet poetic reflection, giving shape to an exhibition that intertwines the practices of four artists from different backgrounds, united by layered and highly personal interpretations of contemporary figuration.

The state of expectation is no longer a neutral condition, but a pause charged with emotional intensity. It is a dense, almost corporeal suspension that places Pearce’s works in a new and more explicitly “human” dimension. Body, mind and machine thus become objects to be observed simultaneously, not in opposition but in mutual relation: one is functional to the other.

The title chosen for this new and unprecedented exhibition project refers to a condition of temporary suspension, a transitory and indefinite state where the subjects of the works seem to find themselves. The stasis evoked by the expression, however, reveals a repressed tension that persists as a possibility.
