Mutual Coupling Between HF Antennas: What You Need to Know

🚨 HF Operators, Take Note!

If you’ve got multiple HF antennas close together, your signal might be “off” without you knowing why. The culprit? Mutual coupling—when antennas interact and affect each other’s performance.

What can happen:

⚡ Resonance shifts → unstable SWR

🔌 Impedance changes → harder to match

📡 Distorted radiation patterns → unwanted lobes

📻 Unwanted RF in nearby receivers

How to fix it:

📏 Keep distance : ideally ≥ 0.25 λ and orient antennas orthogonally

🛠 Electrical decoupling: RF chokes, proper baluns, use of high quality coaxial cables.

✅ Takeaway: Mutual coupling happens—but with the right setup, your HF station will stay steady, predictable, and perform at its best.
