🌿 🔥 How do younger generations see their territory, today and in the future?

On 15 May 2026, classes 3A and 3B at the primary school of the Istituto Comprensivo Gisellu in Dorgali, Sardinia (Italy), took part in an activity focused on the territory, its changes, and the importance of caring for it.

The activity was conducted by CMCC researcher Alessio Menini and was also designed as a consultation process to better understand children’s perceptions of their territory: how they see it today, what changes they notice, what concerns them, and what kind of future they imagine.

Through drawings, words, and moments of discussion, the children reflected on landscape, community, prevention, climate change, and wildfire risk, imagining together a safer, more resilient, and more sustainable future.

The initiative was carried out within the framework of the European projects The HuT Nexus Project, dedicated to wildfire risk prevention and mitigation, and DRYAD Project, which develops Nature-Based Solutions to protect Mediterranean agro-silvo-pastoral ecosystems from the impacts of climate change.

"The world will continue to warm until we stop burning fossil fuels. This is the most simple premise of climate science and it provides a simple goal,” says Dargan Frierson, as he explains why we need to reduce emissions to stabilise the climate.

“I have hope for the future because without hope we can’t change anything. If you can visualize a different future that you believe is possible, then change can happen,” says Massimo Tavoni, as he outlines the achievements already made in addressing key challenges such as the energy transition.

From advances in renewables to the great progress made in batteries, climate science is ensuring that hope and optimism are rooted in realism.

Dargan Frierson, professor at the University of Washington and CMCC Bassi Fellow, and Massimo Tavoni, Director European Institute on Economics and the Environment at CMCC, participated today in the panel "Il clima che cambia in un mondo che cambia", al Green and Blue Festival in Milan.

"In un clima che cambia, ci troviamo sempre più spesso a fronteggiare eventi estremi che non si verificano in modo isolato, ma interagiscono tra loro, con effetti a cascata su diversi settori socioeconomici.
Sono eventi estremi ad alto impatto e bassa probabilità. Sono rari, senza precedenti storici.
E se non possiamo prevedere in modo preciso le cause e l’accadimento di tali eventi, quello che possiamo fare è spostare l’attenzione sul sistema per migliorare la gestione di queste emergenze.

Silvia Torresan, Senior Scientist al CMCC, ha evidenziato l'importanza dello studio e dell'analisi integrata dei rischi climatici nel suo intervento "The city as a system: risk analysis from high impact extreme events" alla Venice Climate Week a Venezia.

La Fondazione CMCC studia le interdipendenze tra infrastrutture critiche e sistemi socio ecologici per identificare le vulnerabilità comuni e rafforzare la resilienza del sistema. Attraverso l’intelligenza artificiale, approcci partecipativi e strumenti come il serious gaming, si esplorano scenari complessi e si simulano possibili crisi per supportare decisioni più efficaci in condizioni di incertezza.

🌱 On May 11, 2026, InBestSoil held an information day at the Agris San Michele experimental farm in Ussana, focused on soil health, conservation agriculture, and local value chains.
The field visit brought together researchers, technicians, and local stakeholders to discuss sustainable and replicable solutions for Mediterranean agriculture.

InBestSoil is a EU funded project, aiming to provide data, evidence, tools and models to assess how investment in soil health can contribute to the transition to a long-term resilient and sustainable use of soil. The CMCC Foundation is partner of the project and, together with Agris Sardegna – Agenzia per la ricerca in agricoltura, is responsible for Living Lab no.1 on Mediterranean agricultural soils.

On May 7, 2026, in Tortolì, the 𝙄𝙄𝙄 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙨𝙝𝙤𝙥 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙊𝙜𝙡𝙞𝙖𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖 𝘿𝙚𝙢𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝘼𝙧𝙚𝙖 was held within the European project The HuT Nexus, dedicated to the prevention and mitigation of wildfire risk.

The event concluded a participatory process that integrated advanced modelling and social research, gathering local knowledge, spatialized perceptions and stakeholders’ operational priorities.

The work contributed to the development of territorial management scenarios and a participatory planning framework to support more resilient communities facing wildfires and climate change.

Il cambiamento climatico è una emergenza sanitaria: bisogna agire oggi

Dichiarare il cambiamento climatico una "emergenza sanitaria pubblica di rilevanza internazionale", superando le regole attuali concepite solo per epidemie temporanee, è un allarme che ha a che fare molto con l’Europa, ci spiega Paola Mercogliano, climatologa, ricercatrice del Centro euro-meditterraneo per i cambiamenti climatici: “Ci stiamo scaldando del 20% più velocemente degli altri continenti e vediamo l’impatto, ad esempio, del caldo che sta arrivando come estate che crea significativi problemi sanitari, anche la siccità e la mancanza d’acqua hanno impatti sulla salute”. “Il cambiamento climatico non è un problema ambientale è una questione sanitaria, non è un allarme ma una condizione stabile e presente, serve intervenire oggi e non domani”. Le priorità: il verde, le persone fragili, sistemi d’allerta per prevenire. “Ci vogliono politiche sociali perché il cambiamento climatico non è uguale per tutti, e poi l’energia è un tema fortemente collegato”. “La mitigazione è l’unica arma reale che abbiamo per contenere gli impatti che già oggi sono importanti”.
