Casey Driessen is—like his music—inspired, unconventional and truly original. His distinct and soulful approach to the fiddle has led to collaborations with artists such as Béla Fleck (& the Flecktones), Bassekou Kouyate, Jerry Douglas, Tim O'Brien, Darrell Scott, Steve Earle, & Zac Brown Band. Driessen’s style of funky fiddle rhythm is quickly earning him the reputation as the leader of "The Chop

Couldn’t resist a visit to see Il Cannone, the violin of Niccolò Paganini—arguably the world’s most celebrated and virtuosic violinist. Upon his death in 1840, he gifted his 1743 Guarneri del Gesu to the city of Genoa. It’s on display in a government museum with other artifacts from his life. The wax on the back of the scroll is the seal of ownership of Genoa, a common practice at the time. I was fortunate to meet one of two caretakers of the instrument at his shop. He has studied the instrument as much as (if not more) than anyone and makes serious replicas. One is seen here with my 5-string Silakowski fiddle whose pattern was taken from Paganini’s instrument. And I received a gift of antique mutes to add to my collection!

Had a blast sitting in with the Dave Matthews Band in Charlotte…came home with the songs rolling around in my head, still playing them, Tripping Billies in particular. In these situations, the best thing you can do is lay down some fiddle loops and let the fingers explore. Hope we get to play again sometime!

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
I thought my Italian collaborations this trip were over until I got a message from organetto extraordinaire Filippo Gambetta. He was on his back to Genoa and I was excited to find our schedules lined up for one late afternoon tune on the Italian Riviera.

To learn more about Filippo’s music, please visit https://www.filippogambetta.com/en/

He showed me a type of dance tune from the Quattro Province region called a monferrina. The melody—Monferrina di Napoleone—was full of things that get me excited about a new tune: more than two parts, a form that’s different from what I’m used to (A BB C DD), and a couple of extra beats thrown in. Filippo suggested playing the melody slower and more fluid than the traditional dance rhythm. People would stop and listen. Dogs barked in the distance. The weather was perfect.

At times, it felt like we were one instrument, ebbing and flowing, breathing in sync. Dynamic, conversational, and spontaneous. I like this setting for music, and I like this duo.

ABOUT THE COLLABORATION
My final collaboration in northern Italy was with organetto extraordinaire Filippo Gambetta, in a park along the Italian Riviera. He showed me a tune called a monferrina from the Quattro Province region. At times, it felt like we were one instrument, ebbing and flowing, breathing in sync. Dynamic, conversational, and spontaneous. I like this setting for music, and I like this duo. Make sure to check out his music and projects!
