CONDITIONBLACK - When I'm Not (2010 - Arctic Music Group/Goodfellas)

vote: 7/10

Born in 2006 by an idea of the guitarist Michele Santamaria, the Ligurian Conditionblack aredevoted to a simple but effective rock with metal nuances bringing an alternative - rockresult; so said, it seems just one product like many others but there is a good reason for theirsigning to the American Arctic Music Group! First, Sara Giovinazzo's voice gives to every song a special energy with her warm and modulated timbre which perfectly suits the genre proposed. Then, Francesco Molinelli's bass is one of the best lately heard and Chris Parisi's drums givesrhythm to every song, even the most melodic one. In these four years, the band, after producing the first demo "Nemesi" has taken part to many contests and holds a good round of lives. The album was produced by Michele, Sara and Andrea Maddalone, an appreciated musician of the Italian scene. The result has been this "When I'm not" that can be heard, over half an hour, with real pleasure thanks to his melodies that are always well arranged and alternate with a quite heavy rock ground. This can be witnessed by the beautiful "Bored", one of most interesting episodes of the whole Cd, an elegant track in which immediately have the proof of the excellent skills of the members and where Sara shows a sublime performance: a potential hit single on which I would invest a lot as for promotion. Harder sounds for "Feel the silence" in which the rhythmical combination of the duet Molinelli/Parisi gives that amount of power that makes you come out of the mass. In every song there are keyboard inserts that enforce the melodies, never out of place, and that create a sense of romanticism all along the CD. Very intimate and particular is for example "Hidden in the dark" in which Sara 's voice shows its versatility. the beginning of "In the Opa" reminds me of something by Police, as evidence of the great variety in the band's style, and it goes on with fast series of interesting syncopated rhythms. "Devil kills "is more hard-oriented and maybe it suits more the readers of our webzine, even if the rock elegance of Conditionblack is also present here. If you're looking for extreme rock, this is not your case, but if you want music that makes you dream, relax, travel with your mind I think you would really appreciate this CD. Other musicians took part in the recordings of the album: Andrea Maddalone, Alessandro Paolini, Luca Scherani. Beautiful also is "Ophelia" that after Bored I think it is at the top of the CD. It ends with the title track "When I'm not" followed by "Nobody alone"; classicizing atmospheres for the first which is quite rocking and with a good refrain, and the second very relaxed, intimateat the start and then its tone rises pulling us along the trip we undertook the the listening of the very first official work of this Genoese band. I don't know if there's place for this genre in Italy, but certainly Conditionblack have more than it takes to lead this new movement! Congratulations and go on like this, guys! Klaus P.
