Öskudagur (Ash Wednesday) in Iceland is a fun and lively celebration, especially for children. Instead of focusing on religious traditions, the day has turned into a costume-filled event similar to Halloween. Kids dress up and go from store to store, singing songs in exchange for candy.

An older Icelandic tradition involved öskupokar—small bags filled with ash or stones. Children and pranksters would try to secretly hang these onto the backs of unsuspecting people as a playful trick. While this custom has mostly disappeared, the spirit of fun and mischief lives on in today’s celebrations.

Sprengidagur, or “Bursting Day,” is an Icelandic holiday celebrated on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. It is similar to Fat Tuesday or Mardi Gras in other cultures and is traditionally a day of feasting before the fasting period of Lent.

The name Sprengidagur comes from the Icelandic verb sprengja, meaning “to burst,” reflecting the idea of eating so much that one feels ready to burst. The traditional meal of the day is saltkjöt og baunir—salted lamb or pork served with split pea soup. This hearty dish was historically eaten to prepare for the leaner days of Lent.

Though few Icelanders observe Lent today, Sprengidagur remains a beloved tradition, giving people an excuse to indulge in a warm, comforting meal. Do you think you could eat enough to “burst” on Sprengidagur?

Bolludagur is an Icelandic holiday celebrated on the Monday before Ash Wednesday, marking the beginning of Lent. The name translates to “Bun Day,” and the holiday is centered around eating delicious cream-filled buns called bollur. These pastries are typically made from choux or yeast dough and filled with whipped cream, jam, or custard, then topped with chocolate or glaze.

A fun tradition associated with Bolludagur, especially for children, involves making bolludagsvöndur (Bun Day wands). Kids use these decorated wands to playfully “spank” their parents while shouting Bolla! Bolla! Bolla! (Bun! Bun! Bun!). In return, they are rewarded with buns.

While classic fillings like vanilla cream and raspberry jam are popular, some people get creative with caramel, Nutella, or even licorice-flavored cream. What’s your favorite filling for bolla?
