The Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program was developed to standardize the acquisition and assessment of these core competencies and is widely recognized as the benchmark for basic laparoscopic proficiency.
FLS combines a cognitive component covering essential principles of laparoscopic surgery with a validated, simulation-based skills curriculum that evaluates tasks such as peg transfer, precision cutting, ligating loop placement, and intracorporeal and extracorporeal knot tying.
Completion of FLS has been shown in surgical education literature to correlate with improved operative performance and reduced technical errors, making it a cornerstone in modern surgical training and a prerequisite for certification in several training systems.
