5 Unpopular Hinges Every Architect Should Know

Most projects use standard hinges. But luxury architecture often hides its best details in the hardware.

1. Recessed Pocket Pivot (Harmon Hinge)
A hidden pivot system that allows doors to recess into walls, creating a seamless floating-door effect.

2. Offset Concealed Pivot Hinge
Moves the pivot point away from the door edge, making thick stone, veneer and brass-clad doors possible.

3. 3D Adjustable Invisible Hinge
Fully concealed hardware with height, depth and lateral adjustment for perfect door alignment.

4. Center-Hung Pivot Hinge
Rotates around the center of the door, transforming entrances into sculptural architectural statements.

5. 360° Concealed Pivot Hinge
A custom-engineered system that enables full rotational movement for hidden spaces and kinetic architecture.

Air Conditioning Beyond the Basics

Great AC design is not just about cooling. It is about planning, comfort, efficiency, and long-term performance. These are the key points every architect should guide the client on.

1. Right system for the right project
Not every space needs the same AC system. Choosing the right type, such as split, cassette, or ducted/VRF, ensures better comfort, better use of space, and smarter budgeting.

2. Consider part-load performance
Air conditioners often run below full load, so part-load efficiency matters. A system that performs well at partial load can reduce energy use and improve long-term value.

3. Plan for maintenance access
Good design always includes enough access for servicing. Proper clearance around the unit makes maintenance easier and helps avoid future problems.

4. Dew, condensation, and drainage
Poor drainage can lead to water damage, stains, and unhappy clients. Proper slope, traps, and drainage testing are essential before handover.

5. Outdoor unit location is crucial
The outdoor unit should be placed in a well-ventilated, shaded, and easy-to-service location. Wrong placement can cause noise, hot air recirculation, and poor performance.

6. Control strategy matters
Smart control systems improve comfort and reduce energy use. Features like zoning, scheduling, occupancy sensing, and BMS integration can make a big difference.

7. Electrical and load planning
AC planning goes beyond the unit itself. The complete electrical system must be considered. Dedicated circuits, proper sizing, and future DB space help prevent issues later.

8. AC and architecture work together
AC should be integrated into the design, not added as an afterthought. Concealed ducts, linear grilles, and return-air planning create a better and cleaner result.

9. Future-proof your design
Good design today should still work tomorrow. Planning for extra capacity, spare conduits, and future controls keeps the system adaptable as needs evolve.

Design for today. Be ready for tomorrow.

How many of you are aware that AC planning involves much more than just choosing a unit?

Good design is not only about how a space looks - it’s also about how it performs. Choosing the right AC, placing it properly, maintaining it well, and using it smartly can make a huge difference in comfort and energy savings.

Air Conditioning the Home, the Right Way
A well-designed AC setup is not just about cooling a room - it’s about comfort, efficiency, and smart planning.

1. Choose the right size.
An AC that’s too big or too small will never perform well.

Right capacity means better cooling, lower bills, and longer life.

2. Place it smartly.
Avoid direct sunlight, heat sources, and blocked airflow.

Good placement helps the AC work naturally and evenly.

3. Insulate properly.
Cool air escapes easily when walls, windows, or roofs are poorly insulated.

Seal gaps and keep the comfort inside.

4. Don’t ignore maintenance.
Dirty filters reduce cooling and increase power usage.

Regular cleaning keeps the air fresh and the system efficient.

5. Don’t set it too low.
Extreme temperatures don’t cool faster - they only waste energy.

The ideal comfort range is around 24-26°C.

6. Allow ventilation.
Fresh air is just as important as cool air.

A balanced indoor environment feels healthier and more comfortable.

Smart design creates better comfort.
Think right, plan well, stay cool.

How many of you knew that vacuuming plays a vital role in ensuring efficient AC operation? Drop your response in the comments.

Air Conditioning Installation the Right Way
A perfect AC installation is not just about cooling - it’s about performance, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Every step matters when it comes to delivering comfort that lasts.

1. Correct refrigerant piping size & length
The piping must be sized and routed as per manufacturer specifications. Undersized, oversized, or excessively long piping can reduce cooling efficiency and affect system performance.

2. Proper vacuuming before charging
Before charging the system, deep vacuuming is essential to remove moisture and non-condensables. Skipping this step can lead to future failures and poor AC life.

3. Correct drain line slope & trap
A proper drain slope helps water flow smoothly and prevents leakage. Installing the right trap near the indoor unit avoids damp walls, dripping issues, and future complaints.

4. Outdoor unit placement & clearances
The outdoor unit needs enough space for proper airflow. Clearances around the unit help reduce strain, improve performance, and prevent breakdowns.

5. Electrical connections the right way
Safe and tight electrical connections are non-negotiable. Correct wire size, proper MCB selection, and earthing ensure safety and long-term reliability.

6. Insulation - don’t leave it half done
Full insulation prevents sweating, water dripping, and energy loss. Sealing all joints properly is key to efficient cooling and a neat installation.

7. Leak test after charging
Even a small leak can create big problems later. Testing with soap solution or a leak detector ensures the system is sealed and ready for use.

8. Airflow & static pressure check
Balanced airflow is important for even cooling and comfort. Poor airflow can cause noise, uneven cooling, and even coil freezing.

9. Commissioning - the final step
Final commissioning confirms that the system is working correctly. Checking pressures, amp draw, modes, and performance ensures a smooth handover to the client.

Do it right, sign it right - because a well-installed AC system creates comfort, trust, and fewer callbacks.
