The pH Scale

The pH scale is used to measure how acidic or basic (alkaline) a solution is. It ranges from 0 to 14 and is based on the concentration of hydrogen ions (H⁺) in a solution.

A pH of 7 is neutral, which is the pH of pure water. Values below 7 indicate acidic substances, while values above 7 indicate basic or alkaline substances.

The pH scale is important in many biological and chemical processes because enzymes, body fluids, and cellular reactions function properly only within specific pH ranges.
