AALIM Charitable Trust based in Udaipur, India focuses on Education Scholarships, Senior's empowerment and Knowledge sharing through its Knowledge Center.

Abdai Ali & Memoona Sabunwala were very strong advocates of education as the best inheritance that parents can give to their wards. Belonging to the economically middle class strata of society, this couple had to struggle to make both ends meet and at the same time maintain dignity in the society. Against all odds and prevalent social norms, they managed to educate their three wards, two daughters

and a son. The eldest daughter, Hussaina, did her matriculation in 1955 at a time when most girls either did not go to school or were school drop outs after primary education. The second daughter, Salma, did her graduation in 1964. When it came to decide about their only son, their sights were fixed for a professional degree in spite of the fact that funds were not readily available. To begin with jewelry was sold and later loans were taken. A stage came when there was no option but to abandon the engineering studies of their son for want of funds. Help came from a friend and brother and the engineering studies were completed. Years later when the son was gainfully employed as an officer in the Indian Army and made an attempt to pay back the loan; this friend and brother advised him to help someone else in need. This is the genesis of the formation of this trust. The primary objective of the trust revolved around harnessing the energy of the rising sun (our youth). To begin with our focus was to alleviate the suffering of our middle class families when it came to finances for higher education for their wards. Grant of scholarships was not on our mind. We were looking at interest free loan scholarships for professional degrees where the fees and other expenses were out of reach of our middle class families. This format of interest free loan scholarship ensured that the beneficiary, having met his/her objective in studies, would return the loan in installments within a period of two to three years after he /she was gainfully employed. This format has worked well in that the trust is able to finance new applicants out of funds received as refund of loan scholarships and not having to depend on fresh donations. The second objective on the radar of the trust has been to salute our senior citizens. The current socio-economic scenario in the country is such that, in spite of the best of intentions on the part of the young generation, the care for the elders remains neglected to a certain extent. The elders in the community suffer from a feeling of loneliness and isolation. So far the trust has not been able to achieve any progress on this front. However, the establishment of a knowledge Centre by the trust would address this issue to some extent. The main objective in establishing a Knowledge Centre is to provide a platform with adequate infrastructure for dissemination / sharing of knowledge in all possible fields for youth as well as senior citizens. To start with, the following activities are planned to be organized:

Conduct seminars, workshops and lectures on select subjects and inviting leading persona in the respective field to participate and share their experience. Provide vocational training sessions for senior citizens such as computers and data entry jobs. Free use of PC Lab with Internet facilities for needy research scholars. A Library and reading room catering to the needs all age groups

Meet two regular patrons of Aalim Knowledge center, the Nimawat sisters. Bharathi Nimawat, seen in the photograph, spends her days at the knowledge center studying for the entrance exams for 2nd Grade Teachers job. She has done her B.Ed and aspires to clear the exams and secure a government job to establish her teaching career. She finds the perfect environment to concentrate here in Aalim and also the resources like subscriptions of magazines for competitive exams like "Pratiyogita Darpan" and other similar publications. Bharathi's younger sister Rajani is an Electrical engineer who graduated from Geetanjali college and now aspires to clear the Engineering services exam, RPSC exam, so she can get a government job, like a officer in Indian Railways. Rajani makes use of the free internet facility in the Knowledge center to research the study material on Wikipedia. Bharathi and Rajani live in Malla Talai but spend almost 8-9 hrs at Aalim working towards their goal. We wish both of them success in their endeavors.

Meet Dinesh Joshi, a regular at the Aalim Knowledge center for the past year. Here is a very inspiring story of a hardworking young man. Dinesh is a Jhadol resident who finished his B.Ed and was teaching Hindi and Sanskrit to 6th-10th standard students for 3 yrs while he simultaneously did his MA in Hindi. He dreamt of bigger things in life than what he had already achieved. He knew his ambitions needed him to move to the city and so he did. He found a little space on rent to live but needed a place to work towards his goal. He aspires to get a prestigious Government job by clearing the Rajasthan Subordinate Services exam on August 28th and that means tough competition. But that is something he is used to. After he found this library space to study, He recently cleared the 3rd grade teachers exam with 71% , an exam in which 7 lakh applicants appear but only 66,000 qualify. He also cleared the pre-qualifications for Rajasthan Patwari. Aalim Knowledge Center is proud to be a part of his journey so far. Dinesh spends most of his days in the quiet library environment of Aalim Knowledge Center studying hard and working towards his goal in life. We wish him luck for the upcoming RAS exams.

Today was a happening day for Aalim Knowledge Center!! Aalim's board of trustees visited the knowledge center and witnessed first hand the resources being used by neighborhood children. The volunteers had a meeting about upcoming Sunday workshops. Interviews were conducted and we now have a full time Librarian. We are excited to announce that Aalim Knowledge Center will now be open Monday - Friday 10 am-8 pm, Saturday 10 am - 5 pm and Sunday 10 am - 1 pm. Today was a day well spent at Aalim Knowledge Center!

On Feburary 26th seven students from Hunar Ghar, a progressive, rural primary school in Bakhel village (Kotra district), near Mount Abu visited the Aalim Knowledge Center. These students had never been to a city or seen a library before. They learnt about libraries, how they operate and how they can serve their personal education.
