Watching this kind of reels all over my insta feed, i think on tight slap to the Trainer and not his client for his poor teaching techniques holding a client's knees to prevent them from moving past their toes during a lunge is outdated and poor coaching technique.
Here is why that technique is considered bad coaching, along with better approaches -
WHY "NO KNEES OVER TOES" IS MISGUIDED
IT'S A MYTH: LETTING YOUR KNEES MOVE PAST YOUR TOES
DURING LUNGES OR SQUATS IS NOT INHERENTLY DANGEROUS FOR HEALTHY KNEES.
NATURAL HUMAN MOVEMENT: KNEES NATURALLY PASS THE TOES DURING COMMON ACTIVITIES LIKE DESCENDING STAIRS, WALKING DOWNHILL, OR GETTING UP FROM A LOW CHAIR.
REDUCES KNEE HEALTH: RESTRICTING THE KNEE OFTEN
FORCES THE BODY TO COMPENSATE, INCREASING STRESS ON THE HIPS AND LOWER BACK BY OVER 1000% COMPARED TO ALLOWING NATURAL FORWARD MOVEMENT.
LIMITS MOBILITY: IT PREVENTS TRAINING THROUGH A FULL RANGE OF MOTION, WHICH IS NECESSARY FOR DEVELOPING STRONG, MOBILE ANKLES AND KNEES.

DISRUPTS PROPRIOCEPTION: PHYSICALLY MANIPULATING A CLIENT'S JOINT PREVENTS THEM FROM FEELING THE CORRECT MOVEMENT PATTERN THEMSELVES.
FORCES UNNATURAL MOVEMENT: IT MAY FORCE THE CLIENT
INTO AN AWKWARD POSITION THAT CAUSES MORE PAIN, PARTICULARLY IN THE LOWER BACK.
CREATES FEAR: IT REINFORCES THE FALSE IDEA THAT THE KNEE IS FRAGILE AND CANNOT HANDLE NATURAL LOADING, WHICH CAN LEAD TO ANXIETY AROUND EXERCISE.

BETTER COACHING CUES -
INSTEAD OF PHYSICALLY HOLDING
THE KNEE, FOCUS ON THESE CUES TO ENSURE PROPER FORM:
"KEEP YOUR FRONT HEEL FIRMLY ON THE GROUND." IF THE HEEL IS DOWN, THE LOAD IS DISTRIBUTED CORRECTLY, REGARDLESS OF
HOW FAR FORWARD THE KNEE GOES.

“TRACK YOUR KNEE OVER YOUR SECOND/THIRD TOE." FOCUS ON ALIGNMENT (PREVENTING KNEE CAVING)RATHER THAN FORWARD RESTRICTION.

"TAKE A LONGER STRIDE."
A SLIGHTLY LONGER STANCE NATURALLY LIMITS EXCESSIVE KNEE TRAVEL WITHOUT FORCING IT.
"ENGAGE YOUR GLUTES." SHIFTING FOCUS TO THE POSTERIOR CHAIN REDUCES PRESSURE ON THE
KNEES IF THEY ARE SENSITIVE .
DISCLAIMER: IF A CLIENT HAS EXISTING KNEE PAIN,, THEY SHOULD WORK WITH A PHYSICAL THERAPIST TO DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE RANGE OF MOTION.

As a trainer, effective coaching is about simplification, choosing the one or two most crucial cues to improve a lift in real-time rather than addressing every minor flaw.
The "Less is More" Principle -Fix One Thing at a time ,Start with the most critical, highest-risk adjustment (e.g., lumbar spine position).

Pick 1–2 cues for a session and repeat them throughout, allowing the athlete / clients to adapt and overcome.
Prioritize External Over Internal Cues ,Make Cues Actionable and Simple ,Time Your Cues Properly
Giving a cue too early or too late causes confusion or unintended movement.
By following these basic cue principles, you move from "over-coaching" to enabling, building a client who is competent, confident, and independent.

Trainer's Checklist: Is the cue simple?Is it positive? Can it be acted on immediately?If not, wait.
