Rather than just being home to gigantic and humongous mountains, ladakh is also home to various colourful festivals. i'd rather say ladakhi people showcase their lives through these festivals. we've created a complete list of top 5 ladakhi festivals to give you insight when to plan your next or first trip to leh, because missing out on these festivals would be a blunder ;)
1)Losar: it's celebrated to flag the start of new year. it's one of the most popular among all the festivals celebrated by ladakhis. it holds much importance as people from different corners of the world come to be a part of the festival.
Date: 27 December 2019
2)Sindhu Darsha: Better known as Guru Purnima, this festival is celebrated to honour Indus River. Locals believe that Indus River plays a huge role in uniting different parts and communities of India.
Dates: 12 june 2019-14 june 2019
3) Hemis Tsechu: Hemis Tsechu is one of the most important festivals. This festival streches over 2 days. The celebration includes mask dance by the lamas of Hemis Monastries and at the end of the celebration they come with a sacrificial offering.
Date: July 11-12 2019
4) Ladakh Festival; The event is marked with a host of cultural programs, impressive dance performances, and magnificent robes everywhere you look. The entire festival spans over a period of two weeks and comes to and end at the polo ground at Leh. its celebrated in the month of september.
5) Thiksey Gustor: All bad things ultimately come to an end. This is the spirit which this festival celebrates. Gustor, which means, “sacrificing the 29th date”, is a two day festival that commences with the offerings of charms and chants to the monks residing at the monastery.
