Huge cache of arms, ammunition and narcotics seized, one arrested

In a major success on anti terror activities , Kupwara Police has arrested a person from Karnah area of the district and recovered huge quantity of arms , ammunition and narcotics . Based on a specific information received by District Police Kupwara, that a huge consignment of arms , ammunition and narcotics has been smuggled in by two persons in Chatkadi area of Police Station Karnah, a joint search operation was carried by police team led by SHO Karnah along with a team of Army 6 JAK RIF. During the search operation one Umar Aziz son of Aziz-u- Rehman Kumar a resident Chatkadi was apprehended. On his sustained questioning, Umar confessed about the receiving of a consignment of arms , ammunition and narcotis by him and his other associate. On Umar’s disclosure, a detailed search was carried out and a huge consignment of narcotics and arms and ammunition was recovered from Garangnard Chatkadi. The recoveries include five (05) Pistols, 10 Pistol Magazines, 77 Pistol rounds , one pistol cleaning rod, one Pistol User Manual guide, four (04) Hand Grenades and 10 packets of He**in like narcotics substance weighing 9.450 Kgs .
A FIR under number 01/2023 u/s 7/25 IA Act, 5 Explosive Substances Act 8/21-29 NDPS Act 13,18, 20, 23 & 38 UA(P)Act stands registered and investigation taken up.
As per inputs, the consignment was meant for the TRF offshoot of proscribed terrorist organisation Lashkar e Toiba (LeT).

Search ops enters day 2 as drowned Baramulla girl remains untraceable
Baramulla, Jan 01 : The search operation to locate the body of a girl, who jumped into the river Jhelum in Khanpora area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, entered day 2nd on Sunday.
An official told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) the girl had jumped into the river Jhelum yesterday afternoon near Khanpora bridge and soon after a search and rescue operation was launched.
He said the operation was however halted for the night as the girl remained untraced. “Today morning the operation has been resumed,” he said.
Notably, this is the second such incident in the district within 20 days as earlier a girl jumped into the Jhelum in Sopore town, while her body still remains untraceable—(KNO)

*Mercury Plummets To Minus 9.4°C In Pahalgam, Minus 8.2°C In Gulmarg*
*Barring Srinagar, All Other Places In J&K Also Record Drop In Night Temperature*
Srinagar, Jan 1 (GNS): The minimum temperature plummeted to season’s lowest in the famous resorts of Pahalgam and Gulmarg, recording a low of minus 9.4°C and 8.2°C respectively, even as Srinagar saw an increase for the second consecutive day on Sunday.
A meteorological department official here told GNS that Srinagar recorded a low of 0.5°C against last night’s 0.4°C. The temperature was 2.6°C above normal for the summer capital, the official said. Srinagar has so far seen the coldest temperature this season on December 25 when mercury plummeted to minus 5.8°C.
Qazigund recorded a low of 0.3°C against 0.5°C on the previous night. The temperature was 3.2°C above normal for the gateway town of Kashmir, he said.
Pahalgam, he said, recorded a low of minus 9.4°C against minus 9.0°C on the previous night. The minimum temperature was 2.8°C below normal and the coldest night recorded this season in the famous tourist resort in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, he said.
Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.6°C against minus 0.6°C on the previous night, he said. It was 3.0°C above normal for the place, he said.
Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 8.2°C against minus 8.0°C on the previous night, the official said. It was 1.2°C below normal for the world famous skiing resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district, the official said.
In Kupwara town, the mercury settled at minus 4.5°C against minus 1.1°C on the previous night in the north Kashmir area, he said. The official said that the temperature was 2.0°C below normal.
Jammu recorded a low of 5.7°C against 6.1°C on the previous night. It was 1.6°C below normal for J&K’s winter capital, he said.
Banihal recorded a low of 2.2°C (above normal by 2.0°C), Batote minus 0.3°C (below normal by 2.3°C), Katra 6.0°C (0.3°C below normal) and Bhadarwah minus 0.8°C (0.3°C above normal).
In Ladakh, Leh and Kargil recorded a low of minus 14.8°C, the official said.
Kashmir is under the grip of Chillai-Kalan, the 40-day long harsh winter period that started on December 21. It does not mean an end to the winter either. It is followed by a 20-day-long period called ‘Chillai-Khurd’ that occurs between January 30 and February 19 and a 10-day-long period ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold) which is from February 20 to March 1.
Regarding the forecast, the MeT official said that mainly dry weather was expected across J&K till January 8. (GNS)

Girl jumps into river Jhelum in Baramulla, rescue ops on
Baramulla, Dec 31: A girl on Saturday jumped into the river Jhelum in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district even as search and rescue operation has been launched.
An official told the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) that following the incident, a rescue team including police immediately rushed to the spot and launched searches.
