A Tribute to Padma Shri Pushkar Bhan
On His Birth Centenary — 26 August 2026

From Akashvani Srinagar

On the special occasion of the birth centenary of Padma Shri Pushkar Bhan, Akashvani Srinagar pays its heartfelt tribute to one of the most celebrated voices of Kashmiri radio, theatre and humour.

Pushkar Bhan was not merely an actor, playwright, writer or humourist. He was one of the artists who gave radio a human voice and transformed it into a mirror of Kashmiri society.

Through his remarkable creative journey at Radio Kashmir Srinagar, he brought to life the everyday experiences, aspirations, concerns and humour of the people of Kashmir. His celebrated programmes, particularly ‘Zoon Dab’ and ‘Machama’, became an inseparable part of the listening culture of generations of Kashmiris.

His iconic character ‘Mama’ became more than a radio character. For countless listeners, Mama was a familiar presence in their homes—a voice that could make them laugh while also making them think.

What made Pushkar Bhan special was his ability to use humour and satire not merely for entertainment, but as a means of social commentary. Through wit, warmth and extraordinary understanding of human nature, he addressed everyday problems and social realities with a simplicity that touched ordinary listeners.

His contribution extended beyond radio to Kashmiri theatre, literature and cinema, leaving an enduring imprint on the cultural landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. His Padma Shri was a recognition of a creative journey that had already made him a household name, while his literary and artistic work continued to earn him admiration and distinction.

For Akashvani Srinagar, however, Pushkar Bhan represents something even more profound. He belongs to the generation of pioneering artists who helped shape the identity of Radio Kashmir—a generation that demonstrated how broadcasting could become a bridge between an institution and the people it served.

His work reminds us that radio is not merely about sound.
It is about memory, emotion, identity and human connection.

Decades may have passed, but the laughter he created, the characters he brought alive and the stories he told continue to live in the collective memory of Kashmir.

On his birth centenary, Akashvani Srinagar remembers Padma Shri Pushkar Bhan with deep respect, gratitude and affection.

His voice may have fallen silent,
but its echo continues to resonate—
in the memories of generations,
in the rich tradition of Kashmiri broadcasting,
and in the enduring legacy of Akashvani Srinagar.

Akashvani Srinagar pays a humble and heartfelt tribute to Padma Shri Pushkar Bhan.

A legendary voice.
A master of humour and satire.
A cherished memory of Radio Kashmir.
An enduring part of Kashmir's cultural heritage.

Kashmir now celebrates every festival without any fear.
