Srinagar, Oct 01: The Saudi-led coalition in Yemen on Thursday accused the Houthis of carrying out a drone attack on an electricity distribution station in the holy city of Medina, calling it a deliberate strike on civilian infrastructure.

Coalition spokesman Maj. Gen. Turki al-Maliki said the drone hit the Taibah electricity distribution station at 5:11 a.m. local time on Tuesday. An operational review and analysis of the drone's debris established Houthi involvement in planning and executing what he called a "cowardly terrorist act."

The strike knocked one transformer out of service but did not disrupt the wider electricity grid, al-Maliki said.

The facility supplies power to the Prophet's Mosque, one of Islam's holiest sites. Al-Maliki accused the Houthis of seeking to provoke Muslims by targeting the holy cities of Mecca and Medina.

He said the coalition would continue taking measures to deter Houthi attacks and to protect the two holy mosques and the visitors who travel to both cities.

The Houthis had not commented on the accusation at the time of publication.

Irani Cup Returns to Srinagar After Nearly 40 Years; BCCI Pledges Full Backing for New Stadiums in Jammu and Srinagar

Srinagar, Oct 1: BCCI President Mithun Manhas on Thursday called the staging of the Irani Cup 2026 in Srinagar a moment of immense joy, and said the Board will extend complete support to the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) in building stadiums and bringing larger fixtures, including international matches, to the region.

Speaking on the sidelines of the match at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium, Manhas said: "I would want more matches to come here. A match of this level is happening after almost four decades, so it is a matter of great happiness. Cricket has returned. Effort from the Board will continue and JKCA will have full support of the BCCI so that they can organize matches on a bigger scale and also bring international games."

Asked whether Srinagar could host T20 fixtures like those staged elsewhere in the country, Manhas said the essential requirement is basic infrastructure, which has yet to be built. He expressed hope that the newly formed JKCA body would prioritise it. "Recently the new body has been formed, we hope their focus will be on building stadiums. From BCCI side, I assure we will support them fully."

Manhas stressed that building and maintaining venues is the responsibility of the state association. "I have said earlier, it is the state association's job to have stadiums, not only here but in Jammu as well, wherever under their jurisdiction they must have grounds. Efforts should be that stadiums are there in both Jammu and Srinagar and as I said BCCI's full support will be there."

Manhas said top-level matches nurture local talent, pointing to J&K's presence in the Irani Cup as Ranji champions. "Today J&K has done quite well and Rest of India also made a strong comeback. Tomorrow morning's session will be very important," he said.

He recalled that the BCCI administered JKCA from June 2021 to 2025, and lauded the outcomes of that period. "The way JKCA performed during that period is commendable and credit goes to BCCI, especially Jay Shah ji who visited J&K after almost 67 years and saw everything in detail and gave full support to the sub-committee due to which they could do something for children and children also showed wonders. Talent was there earlier also, it just needed direction."

"When you give confidence to a player, result is in front of you – they became Ranji Trophy champions. The new body is also doing quite good work so far and it is commendable. My hope is they support more so that Jammu Kashmir cricket grows further," he added.

Urging young cricketers to stay sincere and work hard, Manhas cited the recent selection of Aqib Nabi from Baramulla as proof that talent can emerge from anywhere. "Message is very simple, be sincere to yourself, work hard. Recently you saw Aqib Nabi's selection. It proves that no matter where you are from, he is from Baramulla, if you see his story, it is very inspiring.

Not just his, there are many players who have not come to forefront yet but their story is similar. So just keep working hard, if you are talented and hardworking and have passion, you will definitely play for the country. Not just for Kashmiri youth but for entire Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh."

Srinagar, Oct 01: Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference Leadership paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti, recalling his landmark visit to Kashmir in August 1947 and his enduring message of peace, communal harmony, brotherhood and non-violence.

Party leaders noted that the visit took place at an extraordinarily turbulent moment, as communal violence swept across much of the subcontinent and Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah languished in prison. Gandhi's only visit to Kashmir, from August 1 to 3, 1947, included a meeting with Sheikh Abdullah's family at their ancestral home in Soura.

ANC President Begum Khalida Shah, who was 14 years old at the time, shared her memories of the occasion while paying homage to the Mahatma. She recalled Gandhi's arrival at the Soura residence, where he expressed solidarity with the family over Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah's incarceration and assured them that the persecution of a true satyagrahi would not go in vain.

Describing the context of the visit, Begum Khalida Shah said Gandhi regarded Kashmir as a "ray of hope" while communal fires raged across India and Pakistan. She noted that Gandhi was deeply impressed by the absence of attacks on Kashmiri Pandits in Srinagar and elsewhere, as well as by the efforts of Sher-e-Kashmir's National Conference volunteers to safeguard their homes. These, she said, strengthened his faith in Kashmir's tradition of communal harmony and brotherhood.

The ANC leadership described the visit as a significant chapter in the region's history, particularly for the message of coexistence and inter-community solidarity that Gandhi associated with the Valley.

Paying homage to the Mahatma, party leaders recalled his commitment to peace, truth, non-violence and respect for all faiths and urged that the spirit of harmony he witnessed in Kashmir continue to be remembered and upheld.

Foundation Stone Laid for Hawza Ilmiyya Zainabiya (SA) for Girls at Ahmedpora

Srinagar, October 1: A new chapter in religious and academic education for girls in Jammu and Kashmir began at Ahmedpora, Pattan, with the laying of the foundation stone of Hawza Ilmiyya Zainabiya (SA) for Girls on Thursday, coinciding with the 12th death anniversary of prominent religious scholar Hujjat-ul-Islam wal-Muslimeen Maulana Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA).

Conceived as a long-term educational institution, the Hawza aims to provide girls with a blend of religious learning, academic education and professional development, while creating wider opportunities for women to emerge as educated, spiritually grounded and socially engaged members of the community.

The foundation-laying ceremony brought together prominent religious scholars, community leaders, Zakireen and representatives of the All Jammu & Kashmir Shia Association. Among those present were Hujjat-ul-Islam Maulana Syed Ahmed Ali Abidi, Representative of Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani in India and Imam-e-Juma of the main mosque in Mumbai, and Maulana Mirza Yasoob Abbas, General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board and Administrator of Shia College, Lucknow.

Addressing the gathering, Maulana Syed Ahmed Ali Abidi commended Molvi Imran Ansari for making land available for the project and appealed to the community to contribute towards bringing the institution to fruition. He described education as a foundational principle of Islam and underscored the particular importance of educating girls, observing that an educated woman can profoundly influence the intellectual and moral direction of future generations.

He recalled education as a historic source of strength for the Shia community and expressed hope that the proposed Hawza would become another enduring centre of learning, faith and community advancement. He also prayed for the success of the project.

Maulana Mirza Yasoob Abbas said education remains fundamental to the progress of any society, stressing that educating a girl has implications far beyond the individual. Referring to the multiple roles women occupy within families and society, he said educated women can become powerful agents of positive social transformation.

Drawing inspiration from Bibi Zainab (SA), he highlighted the enduring example of women who combined knowledge, spiritual strength and courage in guiding society through difficult times.

Maulana Abbas also appreciated Molvi Imran Ansari’s religious and public service and his efforts to advance the educational vision associated with Maulana Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA). He assured his support for the proposed madrassa and said efforts would also be undertaken to explore the establishment of a future university focused on Engineering at the same location.

Quoting the well-known hadith, “Ana Madinatul Ilm wa Aliyyun Babuha” — “I am the city of knowledge and Ali is its gate” — he underscored the central place of knowledge and education in Islamic thought.

Speaking on the occasion, All Jammu & Kashmir Shia Association President and JKPC General Secretary Molvi Imran Ansari said the Hawza was being conceived with a long-term vision of empowering girls through an integrated model of religious, academic and professional education.

Centre Knocks Down Metro DPRs for Srinagar & Jammu As Elevation Costs Soar

Srinagar, Oct 01: The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has sent the Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for the proposed Metrolite projects in Srinagar and Jammu back to the Jammu and Kashmir administration, stalling the region's highly anticipated urban rail plans.

The Centre pointed out that the current proposals—which feature fully elevated corridors—directly violate the Metro Rail Policy of 2017. According to national guidelines, Metrolite systems must be constructed "at-grade" (surface level) to preserve their low-cost advantage over standard heavy metro systems.

Because elevating the tracks significantly inflates construction costs, federal authorities determined the current model financially unviable for the cities' projected ridership.

Instead, the Ministry has recommended that the J&K government deploy high-capacity electric buses (e-buses) as a more practical, cost-effective alternative to manage urban mass transit for the time being.

Local authorities must now decide whether to re-engineer the rail routes at ground level or pivot to an expanded electric bus fleet.

Privilege Motion Accuses Law Secretary & Chief Secretary of Trespassing on the House's Prerogative

Srinagar, Oct 01: In any working parliamentary democracy, the chain of command is settled. The people elect legislators, legislators sustain a government and the government directs the civil service. That is why events in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly this autumn have struck so many as not merely improper but almost surreal.

Two of the administration's most senior officials wrote to the Speaker, without the Chief Minister's knowledge, asking that the House be kept from debating a resolution moved by the elected government itself.

The facts are simple. Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo and Law Secretary Achal Sethi wrote to Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather urging him to disallow or prevent discussion on a resolution seeking the immediate restoration of full statehood. Sethi had reportedly drafted an opinion holding that the subject was sub judice and Dulloo routed it to the Chair.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who also holds the Law portfolio, told the House the letters were sent without his approval. PDP MLA Waheed-ur-Rehman Para has since submitted a Motion of Privilege against both officials.

A privilege motion is the House's way of defending its own freedom to deliberate without pressure from outside. Para's argument is that the power to initiate, debate and adopt resolutions is the core of what a legislature does, and that no unelected official may place that power under bureaucratic approval. If the House accepts the charge, it would be asserting that civil servants cannot decide what elected representatives may discuss.

The episode is outlandish in at least three ways. The first is the inversion of hierarchy. A law secretary advises the minister in charge of law, and here that minister is the Chief Minister himself. Yet the advice went to the Speaker, against the government's own resolution and behind the minister's back. The second is the trespass on the Chair.

Whether a matter may be taken up is for the Speaker and the House to judge, not for a bureaucrat to pre-empt in correspondence. The third is the nature of the target. A resolution seeking statehood is, on its face, a political appeal addressed to the Union. It is an expression of the House's will and does not pronounce on anything a court must decide.

Abdullah put the matter in a single sentence when he said such a thing could "happen only in a Union Territory." The line was a rebuke to the officials and also a reminder of what the statehood debate is about: who holds authority when the elected and the appointed disagree.

The reaction has been telling. Speaker Rather called the letters an unprecedented interference. Sajad Lone challenged the government and the Chair to take strict disciplinary action, while Congress MLAs Irfan Hafeez Lone and Nizamuddin Bhat called the intervention unconstitutional and demanded a reference to the Privilege Committee. Only the BJP stood apart, backing the officials and turning its criticism on the Speaker and the Chief Minister.

The officials' defenders will say the sub judice caution was a legal point raised in good faith, and that is a position the Privilege Committee can weigh. But the deeper question does not depend on whether the legal opinion was right.

It is who was entitled to offer it unbidden and over the head of the elected government. The Assembly passed the resolution despite the disruptions, so the House has had its say on statehood. What remains is its verdict on whether the permanent executive may ever again tell it what it may discuss.

MASSIVE NARCOTICS BUST IN SRINAGAR
8 arrested with huge cache of drugs, pistol, ₹85.76L cash & gold worth over ₹1.05 Crore

Srinagar, October 1: Police have busted what they described as a well-established narcotics network operating from Downtown Srinagar, arresting eight persons and recovering a substantial quantity of banned drugs, ₹85.76 lakh in cash, gold worth over ₹1.05 crore and a pistol, besides freezing bank accounts and attaching immovable and movable properties linked to the alleged network.

The case has been registered as FIR No. 135/2026 under Sections 8/21/22/29/25/27A of the NDPS Act, Sections 3/4/25 of the Arms Act and Section 111 of the BNS at Police Station Safakadal.

The arrested persons have been identified as Mohammad Waseem Zargar of Patlipora Chattabal, Haris Hameed Malla of Guzarbal Chattabal, Aqib Saleem Dar of Rampora Chattabal, Inam Ahmad Zargar of Haftiyar Safa Kadal, Sahib Ahmad Ganaie of Danamazar Safa Kadal, Ansar Hussain Bhat of Zabar Mohalla Budgam, Peer Shakoor of Palpora Noorbagh and Haroon Pandit of Guzarbal Chattabal.

Police said two other accused, identified as Faizan Firdous Khanday alias Farzan Pujj, son of Firdous Ahmad Khanday of Malik Sahab Safakadal, and Mohd Shahvar Aleem, son of Salim of Muzaffar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, are absconding.

Addressing a press conference, SSP Srinagar Sandeep Chakravarty, as reported by GNS, said the module was dismantled by M R Gunj Police following coordinated searches at multiple locations in Srinagar as well as in Chandigarh and Ambala.

The recoveries, according to police, included 3.830 kilograms of Codeine, around 40 grams of he**in, 414 Tramadol tablets/capsules, approximately 2,18,500 Tapentadol tablets, 1,200 Pregabalin capsules and a pistol.

The police also recovered approximately ₹85,76,800 in cash. Gold recovered during the operation included 108 gold coins valued at ₹1,27,44,000 and MMTC-PAMP/jewellery weighing around 17 grams and valued at approximately ₹2.55 lakh, with police placing the total value of the recovered gold at ₹1,05,29,400.

In a further financial crackdown, around ₹1.07 crore held in multiple bank accounts was frozen, while police also attached a residential house belonging to Mohammad Waseem Zargar at Patlipora, Chattabal, along with two vehicles, a Maruti Brezza bearing registration number JK01AK-7523 and a Suzuki Ertiga bearing registration number JK01AX-4601.

Elaborating on the alleged modus operandi, SSP Chakravarty said the network was procuring illegal drugs from outside Jammu and Kashmir and supplying them within the region. He described the operation as involving an established network rather than an isolated instance of drug trafficking.

“It is a well-established network,” the SSP said, adding that searches had been conducted in Chandigarh and Ambala with assistance from Punjab Police. He further said raids were underway at pharmaceutical companies outside J&K as part of the investigation.

“We will not spare anyone when it comes to drug abuse,” the SSP said.

Police said the investigation remains underway to unravel the complete structure of the alleged network, establish its forward and backward linkages and identify other persons involved. Further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.

Aga Muntazir Raises Soibug Road, Rishipora Hospital and AMRUT 2.0 Delay in Assembly, Urges for Time-Bound Action

Srinagar, Sep 30: Budgam MLA Aga Syed Muntazir Mehdi on Wednesday raised a range of pressing public concerns during Zero Hour in the Assembly, urging the government to take time-bound action on road connectivity, health infrastructure, the ongoing demarcation exercise, justice and employment-related issues.

Highlighting the long-standing connectivity problem faced by the residents of Soibug, he said the road at Sharifabad was occupied by the Army in the 1990s, leaving people without adequate direct access. He called on the government to provide an alternative road on priority.

"The people of Soibug cannot continue to suffer because of the absence of a proper road. Successive governments have failed to provide an alternative route, and this issue now requires time-bound intervention," he said.

Expressing serious concern over the ongoing demarcation process, he urged the government to ensure the exercise is carried out transparently and that the grievances of affected people are duly addressed.

On the Galwanpora r**e and murder case, the MLA appealed for an expedited trial, stressing that justice must not be delayed. He said that, if convicted, the accused should face the strictest action permissible under the law.

He also raised the stalled work on the 125-bedded District Hospital at Rishipora, Budgam, demanding its immediate resumption and completion within a defined timeline.

"When health infrastructure is already under pressure, work on a 125-bedded hospital cannot remain stalled. The project must be resumed and completed within the stipulated timeline," he said.

He further urged the government to expedite the pending demands of veterinary interns and agriculture graduates.

The legislator also moved a Call Attention Notice on the inordinate delay in executing the 13-kilometre water supply pipeline project sanctioned under AMRUT 2.0 for 13 wards of the Municipal Committee Budgam. Drawing the attention of the Minister in charge of Jal Shakti to the matter, he said the delay was causing considerable hardship to residents and called for immediate steps to speed up the work.

"The AMRUT 2.0 water supply project is directly linked to the basic needs of thousands of residents. The prolonged delay is causing hardship, and the concerned authorities must expedite the work and ensure its timely completion."

Aga Syed Muntazir reiterated that issues affecting basic services and the everyday lives of people must receive priority and concrete action from the government.

From Srinagar to Najaf and Qom, Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari Remembered on 12th Death Anniversary

J&K Shia Association Organises Religious Programmes and 25-Marriage Initiative

Srinagar, September 30: The 12th death anniversary of renowned Islamic scholar, political leader and prominent community figure Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA) was observed across Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday with a series of religious and commemorative programmes, including Quran Khwani, Fatiha Khwani, Marsiya Khwani and Majalis.

Religious scholars, Zakireen, community members and people from different walks of life participated in the programmes, remembering Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA) for his religious scholarship, community service and public contribution.

As part of the observances, Quran Khwani was held at 97 Madrasas affiliated with the All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association for Isale-e-Sawaab of the late scholar. Special Quran Khwani and prayers were also offered in Najaf-e-Ashraf, Iraq, and Qom, Iran, in his remembrance.

The commemorative proceedings began in the morning at the shrine of Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA) at Baba Mazaar, Zadibal, where Quran Khwani, Fatiha Khwani and Marsiya Khwani were held. Religious scholars and Zakireen associated with the All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association participated in the proceedings and offered prayers for the departed soul.

The programme later moved to Imam Bargah Shadipora, Sumbal, where a series of Majalis were organised. The first Majlis was delivered by Maulana Mirza Yasoob Abbas, General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, who recalled the longstanding association between his father, the late Maulana Mirza Mohammad Athar, and Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA), noting that the two had studied together in Lucknow.

Recalling his own interactions with Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA) from his younger years, Maulana Mirza Yasoob Abbas said he had long desired to speak about the late scholar’s life and personality and regarded it as an honour to do so on his 12th death anniversary. He also reflected on the life and teachings of Imam Ali (AS), highlighting the enduring principles of justice, knowledge, courage and service to humanity associated with the Amir-ul-Momineen.

Hujjatul Islam Maulana Syed Ahmed Ali Abidi, representative of Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani in India and Imam-e-Juma of the main mosque in Mumbai, also delivered a Majlis.

During his address, Maulana Syed Ahmed Ali Abidi conveyed a message from Ayatollah al-Uzma Sayyid Ali al-Husayni al-Sistani emphasising the central importance of education within the Shia community. He urged the community to educate its children and youth to a level where Shia Muslims emerge among the most educated communities in India.

Referring to the first revealed word of the Holy Qur’an, “Iqra” (Read), he underscored the importance accorded to knowledge and learning in Islam. He also spoke about the responsibilities of the followers of Ahl-e-Bait (AS), stressing the need to preserve faith, pursue knowledge and remain committed to service to society.

The anniversary also witnessed tributes from political, religious and social leaders across Jammu and Kashmir. Commemorative hoardings were installed at various locations in Srinagar, while newspapers and news organisations carried tributes and articles recalling Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari’s contribution to the religious and social life of the region.

Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA), who passed away on September 30, 2014, remained a prominent religious scholar and public figure whose life was closely associated with religious education, community service and the preservation of Shia religious traditions in Jammu and Kashmir. His death had drawn tributes from across the political, religious and social spectrum.

In a further initiative reflecting the ethos of community service associated with his legacy, the All Jammu and Kashmir Shia Association announced plans to solemnise the marriages of 25 couples from economically weaker families. The marriages are proposed to be conducted by the end of November in the name and memory of Molvi Iftikhar Hussain Ansari (RA), with the initiative aimed at helping families facing financial difficulties in meeting marriage-related expenses.
