A day at Pang, the tiny Hamlet on way to Leh.

Ever since the Manali – Leh Highway was opened to foreigners in 1989 cyclists and motorbikers have revered it as one of the most spectacular rides in the world. It’s certainly one of the highest as Taglang La tops 5300m. Over half of the ride traverses a landscape so high and barren that there’s no permanent human settlement at all – those without camping kit can enjoy the bizarre experience of communal sleepovers under a giant parachute in one of the highway’s parachute tents. The scenery is epic and hard-won over a series of 5000m passes which lead from the lush Kullu Valley over high altitude desert to the remote and starkly beautiful mountain region of Ladakh.

Altitudes: start 2050m (6725ft) / max 5350m (17,552ft) / end 3505m (11,499ft)
