The recent decision by the MHRD to overhaul the MTech degree programmes through the IIT Council, which happens to be the highest decision-making body for IITs, is seen to have significant implications. In fact, this will be the single most important step towards revisiting the Masters’ degree programmes in all the IITs. Before we get into the merits of this decision, let us understand the background that has necessitated this major step.
The expansion of IITs in the last decade has added a multitude of academic courses, including those at the Masters’ level. While most of these courses are conventional, nearly all IITs have tried to develop several industry-relevant courses as well. Thus, one would have expected renewed interest amongst students to take up these degree programmes.
However, the major problem plaguing these programmes has been the severe migration of students midway into their enrollment. Not only does this affect the programme deliverables for IITs, this also act as a serious impediment for industry to make larger commitments to academics. Not only has the IIT council tried to have a course correction, they have also ensured that the needy and meritorious students are not affected by these changes. What then alters the overall scheme of things is the fact that it would bring only serious students, who intend to earn a higher degree in technology, into IITs.
