We built this staircase without column support in a cantilevered design, where an entire staircase flight is detached from adjoining walls. The staircase is floating at the mid-landing too, only joining at the final floor. The cantilevered treads seem to “float” in space, creating a clean, modern, and minimalist aesthetic.
The key structural challenge in such staircases is ensuring that the wall or structure to which the staircase is anchored is strong enough to bear the load of the steps and the weight of anyone using them. We had to ensure that the steps are made of reinforced concrete and steel to provide strength and stability, and the floor they are attached to are designed to handle the significant forces.
This staircase is not only functional but also visually striking, as it creates an illusion of lightness and space. Our client is happy to have such a contemporary look in their 2 storied bungalow house. Here, the floating staircase gives a sense of airiness and visual flow.
