The Global Risks Report 2022 released by World Economic Forum has identified the top 10 global risks by severity according to global perceptions of nearly 1,000 risk experts and world leaders in government, business, and civil society. The report finds that environmental risks dominate the series with 50% being climate or environment-related. This is followed by societal risks that make up a third of the top 10.
The report’s Risk Horizon further assesses perceptions of when the defined risks are most likely to materialize as a critical threat to the world. Environmental risks ranked as a dominant threat constant from the short to long term, while the short term additionally includes the erosion of social cohesion, deterioration of mental health, and infectious diseases, and the medium-term cites economic and debt-related issues.

The Production Gap Report, first launched in 2019, measures the discrepancy or gap between governments’ planned production of fossil fuels against global production levels consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C.
The latest report published on 20th October 2021 finds that despite increased climate commitments, world governments plan to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than would be consistent with limiting warming to 1.5°C. Collective projections depict an increase in production over the next two decades, thus creating a widening gap. With this, the report verifies that current plans are dangerously out of sync with the Paris Agreement temperature limits. With our window of opportunity rapidly closing, we must strengthen measures to address both the demand and supply of fossil fuels, ensure a managed and equitable transition, and close the gap.

While consumers are increasingly seeking out and willing to pay premiums for ecofriendly products, many report difficulty in identifying them. Therefore in the shift towards conscious consumerism, modern consumers demand not only sustainable products, but also transparency that allows them to align their purchasing decisions with personal values. In a 2021 survey of 19,510 adults spanning 28 countries, 85% agreed that they want to see information on the use of scarce natural resources available on product labelling.
These trends signal an emerging priority for companies, offering insights on how sustainability efforts should be strategized. Companies that address these requests will go a long way in creating value, fostering trust and loyalty, and building credibility that enables long-term success.

Worldwide, roughly 3 billion people lack access to clean fuels for cooking, and thus rely on polluting open fires or traditional stoves. The environmental and social ramifications of this are tremendous, from intensifying emissions that feed climate change to causing millions of premature deaths.
We at SustainPlus have successfully implemented initiatives that address these consequences by helping rural households transition towards innovative, modern cookstoves. Together, we can scale up these solutions and accelerate access to this basic right.
