Inmon and Kimball Data Warehouse Models are two pioneering models on which many Business Integration (BI) projects are based.

There is always a debate on these two models. One one end, William H. Inmon - the father of Data Warehousing states a principle which is more centralized. On the other end, Ralph Kimball suggest creating several small Data marts initially.

Here, we have tried to showcase how both of these principals can be integrated rather than compromised - to form a better structure of Data Warehousing and to negate both of their disadvantages.

A database is defined as an organized collection of data. Early databases were flat and limited to simple rows and columns. Today, relational databases and Object-oriented databases are very prominent.

A data warehouse on the other hand is designed to gather business insights and allows to integrate their data, manage it and analyze it.

A data lake - popularly trending since the recent years - is a place to store diverse data from diverse sources and prepares the data later as people access it.

These three data storage methodologies, though defined separately, are interconnected to one another in terms of usage and coexistence. We have just skimmed the definitions of the same.

Feel free to comment if anything is to be added to the definitions.

The History of Data

The concept of data storage and analysis dates back to the Prehistoric Era. With bones being used as a mathematical tool, our Palaeolithic ancestors have been constantly recording information.

During the 1600s, the importance of data documentation started to shine through. John Graunt was one of the major contributors to the same.

It was during the 1800s, that humans started taking the aid of machinery to store data for them. Herman Hollerith and Fritz Pfleumer were some of the important names making this revelation.

With the invention of the World Wide Web, Sir Tim Burton revolutionized the whole concept of Data Storage and paved the way to Big Data as we see it today:

" Data Science is not a subset of Artificial Intelligence. The two technologies share similarities and differences, but one can't be called a subset of the other subject.

Both of these subjects belong to the information technology industry, but their functionalities, goals and use cases differ. "
