From Fragmented Biomass Sourcing to Structured Biofuel Procurement. When biomass sourcing becomes a bottleneck, operations slow down. For a leading paper manufacturer, unorganised suppliers, delayed coordination, and lack of market intelligence were driving up costs and risk.

Partnering with BiofuelCircle enabled a shift to structured, competitive, and insight-led biofuel procurement, unlocking cost optimisation and supply security.

Discover how digital procurement reshaped their sourcing strategy. Link in bio.

Market Insights December 2025: The Biomass Maturity Shift
Briquette prices demonstrated significant resilience in November 2025, stabilising at ₹1.983 per kCal-kg despite a massive 60% surge in monthly supply. 📈
Why did prices stay firm?
1️⃣ Industrial Growth Planning: Consumers are aggressively securing biomass now to hit their 2026 production and green energy targets, absorbing the initial Kharif supply.
2️⃣ Logistical Occupancy: The rural transport network is at full capacity. Biomass haulage is competing for limited fleet space with the broader agricultural harvest, adding a logistics premium to final delivery costs.

The market is decoupled from global coal trends, with briquettes holding a 13-paise premium over equivalent coal. While forward data shows prices trending upward through Q1 2026, we are closely monitoring how the full weight of the new harvest impacts this trajectory.

The energy market witnessed a firm reversal starting July 2025, as briquette prices rose sharply against stable imported coal prices. Peak monsoon supply constraints during August and September further pushed weighted average briquette prices over ₹2.00/kCal-kg, creating a significant price spread favouring coal. Although October saw a slight correction, the continued high cost of briquettes reflects persistent market tightness caused by the rains.

Looking ahead, we project imported coal prices to remain stable in the ₹1.75-₹1.85 per kCal-kg band. However, we anticipate a substantial drop in briquette prices, which will significantly narrow the spread between these fuels through November and December.

Presenting Market Insights: November 2025

Due to heavy rains through September, supply fell sharply while demand increased, leading to significantly higher market prices. Buyers initially hesitated but ultimately accepted the higher costs to secure necessary materials.

Sellers capitalised, raising Sell/Offer Prices to ₹2.236. However, Buyers strongly resisted, keeping their Buy/Bid Prices stable (₹1.67–₹1.72), leading to a wide Bid-Ask spread. Despite this resistance, deals consistently closed closer to Seller expectations, demonstrating a Buyer's willingness to compromise to secure material.

The price correction suggests that the maximum price resistance was hit in September. Buyers are now likely negotiating aggressively or stepping back to await the forthcoming Kharif harvest feedstock, signalling a potential shift in leverage and a definite cooling of the intense upward price pressure.
