The bailout bought time. What Iacocca did with the time saved Chrysler.
What he did with the time was create a new category of American passenger vehicle. The minivan. Before 1983, no American manufacturer had produced anything quite like it. The minivan became the highest-margin product line in Chrysler's lineup for the next two decades.
The political deal was the mechanism. The minivan was the answer.
His name was Lido Anthony Iacocca, known as Lee. He was born on the fifteenth of October, 1924, in Allentown, Pennsylvania. He joined Ford Motor Company in 1946 as a student engineer.
He spent thirty-two years at Ford. He was substantially responsible for the development of the Ford Mustang, introduced in 1964, which became one of the best-selling launches in American automotive history. He became president of Ford Motor Company in 1970.
In July of 1978, Henry Ford II dismissed him. The professional understanding, then and since, was that Ford had decided Iacocca's prominence within the company had become uncomfortable for him personally.
Iacocca was hired by Chrysler Corporation in November of 1978 and was named chairman and chief executive officer in 1979.
What he inherited was structurally near-terminal. Chrysler had lost over one billion dollars in 1979. The product lineup, dominated by large gas-consuming vehicles, was poorly positioned for the high-fuel-price environment following the 1973 oil crisis and the 1979 Iranian revolution. Japanese competition was capturing American market share. The cash position was the immediate problem. By late 1979, the company could not service its outstanding debt without external help.
Iacocca's first structural decision was to go to Washington.
He testified before Congress in the autumn of 1979. The political environment was hostile. Many Republicans and conservative Democrats opposed federal intervention in private industry. The United Auto Workers had to agree to substantial wage concessions. Chrysler's bondholders had to accept restructured terms.
Iacocca assembled the coalition.
The Chrysler Corporation Loan Guarantee Act was signed by President Carter on the seventh of January, 1980. The act authorized federal loan guarantees of up to one and a half billion dollars. Chrysler ultimately drew approximately one point two billion dollars. The conditions included federal oversight of the company's books, Iacocca's symbolic one-dollar annual salary, mandatory union wage concessions, and structural commitments to operational reforms.
This bought time.
What Iacocca did with the time is the part of the story less often centered.
The immediate operational response was the K-car platform — the Dodge Aries and Plymouth Reliant, launched in 1981. These were small, fuel-efficient front-wheel-drive vehicles. They sold modestly well and stabilized Chrysler's short-term position.
The structural response was the minivan.
Iacocca had begun developing the minivan concept at Ford in the early 1970s. Henry Ford II had rejected the project. When Iacocca moved to Chrysler, he brought the concept with him. The first Chrysler minivans — the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth Voyager — went into production in late 1983 at the Windsor Assembly Plant in Ontario.
The minivan created a new product category in American automotive retail. It was not a station wagon. It was not a passenger van. It was a new kind of vehicle designed around the spatial requirements of American family transportation. The seating could be reconfigured. The cargo capacity was substantial. The government had not just been repaid; it had earned a profit on the rescue.

Lee Iacocca remained at Chrysler until 1992, presiding over substantial growth and the acquisition of American Motors Corporation in 1987 (which brought Jeep into the Chrysler lineup). He published a bestselling memoir in 1984. He died on the second of July, 2019, in Bel Air, California, at ninety-four.

He left the White House in January of 1981 at the age of fifty-six. He died forty-four years later, in December of 2024, at the age of one hundred.
The period between those two dates is the longest post-presidency in American history.
What he did with that time changed what an ex-presidency could be.
His name was James Earl Carter Jr. He was born in October of 1924 in Plains, Georgia, in a farmhouse without running water or electricity. He served in the Navy, ran his family's peanut farm, served in the Georgia State Senate, served as Governor of Georgia, and was elected the thirty-ninth President of the United States in November of 1976. He took office in January of 1977. He lost his bid for re-election to Ronald Reagan in November of 1980. He left the White House on the twentieth of January, 1981.
He was fifty-six years old. His presidential service had been four years. The rest of his life was a question.
The standard pattern for ex-presidents of his generation had been retirement to a comfortable ranch or compound, the writing of a memoir, the giving of well-paid speeches, the chairing of corporate boards. The post-presidency, in the American institutional understanding, was a coda. It was the part that came after the part that mattered.
Carter did something different.
In 1982, the year after he left the White House, he founded the Carter Center in Atlanta in partnership with Emory University. The center's mission was specific. It would do substantive work in three areas. Election monitoring in fragile democracies. Public health, with a particular focus on diseases affecting poor populations that the international pharmaceutical industry had neglected. Conflict resolution and human rights advocacy.
He was not the chairman of the board. He was the operational principal. He traveled. He negotiated. He met with presidents and prime ministers and village leaders. He treated the work as his actual job, not as ceremonial activity.
In 1984, three years after leaving the White House, he picked up a hammer for Habitat for Humanity for the first time. He and his wife Rosalynn were walking through New York City when they noticed a Habitat construction project that needed volunteers. They joined. He returned the next year. And the next. The Carter Work Project, an annual week of Habitat building led by the former president and the former first lady, became an institutional fixture.
He continued the annual builds, in country after country, for thirty-five years.
The disease eradication work was the larger institutional accomplishment.
In 1986 the Carter Center began coordinating the global effort to eradicate Guinea worm disease, a parasitic infection that had affected approximately three and a half million people across Africa and Asia at the start of the campaign. Guinea worm is contracted by drinking contaminated water and produces a meter-long worm that emerges painfully from the patient's skin over a period of weeks. The disease has no vaccine and no drug treatment. The only way to eradicate it is to teach people to filter their drinking water, to identify infected water sources, and to stop infected people from contaminating wells before the worm emerges.
The work required decades of patient field operations across dozens of countries. By 2024, the year of Carter's death, the number of reported Guinea worm cases worldwide had fallen to fewer than thirty. The disease is on track to become the second human disease ever eradicated, after smallpox.
Most Americans who can name Jimmy Carter the philanthropist think of him as the man with the hammer. The more consequential work was the man behind the eradication.
The center has also monitored over one hundred and twenty-five elections in nearly forty countries since 1989. It has trained election observers, advised on electoral law, and reported credibly on the freeness and fairness of elections that local governments could not credibly self-report. The monitoring work has been used by international organizations as the standard for what a credible election looks like.
In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for the cumulative body of post-presidential work.
He continued working through his nineties.
In August of 2015, at ninety, he was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma that had spread to his brain. The standard prognosis was less than six months. He was treated with pembrolizumab, a cancer immunotherapy drug that the FDA had approved just a year earlier. The drug, combined with targeted radiation, eliminated his cancer. He returned to Habitat for Humanity work within months. He was, in his own person, one of the most public early demonstrations that the cancer immunotherapy revolution was real.
He lived another nine years.
He fell at home on a Sunday morning in 2019, five days after his ninety-fifth birthday, while preparing for church. He arrived at a Habitat build site in Nashville the following day with fourteen stitches above his left eye and a black bruise across his face. He picked up a hammer.
He entered hospice care in February of 2023. He outlived the expected weeks by twenty-two months.
He died on the twenty-ninth of December, 2024, at home in Plains, Georgia. He was one hundred years old. He had been an ex-president for nearly forty-four years.
The man who had lost his bid for re-election in 1980 had spent the rest of his life building the institutional infrastructure for work that has had larger documented humanitarian impact than most presidencies. Within a couple of years, an Indian Ocean tsunami warning network — buoys, monitoring centers, alert protocols for dozens of nations — was finally established. The warning that wasn't there for Tilly's beach exists now because of beaches like Tilly's. A child did by memory what the machines should have done, and then the absence she'd exposed got filled. Which leaves a strange, durable lesson underneath the famous one: the cheapest, most portable early-warning system humanity has ever built is simply a fact, taught well, to someone young enough to carry it the rest of their life.
