A shinshak is a beautifully carved wooden lintel traditionally placed above windows and doors in Ladakhi architecture.
More than just decoration, it plays an important structural role, helping support thick mud-brick walls and offering protection from the harsh mountain climate.
Crafted by skilled artisans using mallets and chisels, these wooden bands are adorned with delicate floral and geometric motifs through a technique known as Ladakh Shingskos.
Found in homes and monasteries across the region, shinshaks reflect Ladakh’s rich craftsmanship, blending functionality with timeless cultural artistry.
