He remembered the low hum of a transport plane idling on the tarmac and the weight of a rifle that had become an extension of his own arm. When the final bird lifted off in August, the silence that followed was heavier than the combat. He looked at a faded photo of his squad, realizing that while the maps had changed, the mountains remained indifferent to the history written in their soil.
