“I was 7 years old, when I got to know my father had married for the second time. My biological mother had abandoned both me and my father. I was unsure of everything and didn’t know how it would be living with a step mom. She had two daughters of her own. But things were far from what I imagined them to be.
My second mother gave me so much more love, care and attention than my own mother ever did. She treated me like I was her blood, and nothing less. She’d give me everything she gave her own daughters -- she’d make sure to take care of my food, my health and even my education.
When my father started becoming an alcoholic and stopped taking care of us, she took up a job as a cook. Initially, her salary was a few sacks of rice. But she enrolled us in school, where we were given free education and food. When she started earning Rs.6000 a month she saved most of it for our future.
I stayed in that school till the 12th grade and then eventually got a job at a call center in Hyderabad. I moved there and sent most of my earnings back home to her -- I wanted her and my sisters to have a good life.
But after a few months, I needed a gallbladder operation. Through my job I had an insurance that would cover half the cost -- but I needed Rs.40000 more. I was really worried and didn’t know what to do. That’s when my mom stepped in. She gave me all the money she had saved for my sisters’, without any hesitations!
That’s when I realised her true value. But life took a nasty turn, when a couple of months later, she started complaining of a bad back and stomach ache. The doctor said that it might be because of her strenuous job. She was given a pain killer and told to rest -- but it didn’t get any better.
When we went to another doctor, we got to know that she has a tumor on her spinal cord, one that’s slowly killing her. The only recourse is a surgery that will cost us lakhs -- in the meanwhile she’s getting treated at a hospital in Chennai. We had to sell her jewelry and borrow money from friends just for her treatment, so being able to pay for the surgery is out of the question.
My sisters and I are trying our best, but nothing is working out. We have no one else to ask for help, but we’ll do whatever it takes to save our mother. When my mother sees us trying, she says, 'Don't spend on my treatment, Latifa. Instead, invest in your life.' But I want her to know that without her I wouldn’t have come this far, and that without her… there is no life.”
