Google’s Matt Cutts: Guest Blogging Abuse & Spam On The Rise

Google’s Matt Cutts posted a video today on the things one should avoid when doing guest blogging. The main point he made was that guest blogging, on a whole, is “growing” in terms of the spam and abuse he sees in the guest blogging space.

Now, if you are guest blogging, Matt offered four-points on what you should not do.

Don’t make guest blogging your only link building strategy
Don’t send out thousands of mass emails offering to guest blog to random sites
Don’t use the same guest article on two different sites
Don’t take one article and spin it many times

In short, Matt suggests you don’t do low quality, automated, abusive guest blogging without any “merit” or “editorial” value.

This is not the first time Matt or Google commented on guest blogging, here are three other stories on the topic

Google Launches Manual Spam Actions Viewer, Streamlines Reconsideration Process 21/08/2013

After the update of penalty algorithms, there were so many questions from webmasters regarding the manual Webspam action notification messages in Google Webmaster Tools. We could see so many videos put forth by Matt Cutts - last month answering the questions of webmasters on bad backlink examples and Reconsideration requests. After the long analysis of Webmaster needs, Google has come up with a New feature launched in Google Webmaster Tools to help webmasters to view the Manual Webspam Actions taken.

Google today introduced a new feature to help webmasters see if their sites are affected by a manual webspam action for violations of the company’s quality guidelines. Called the manual action viewer, the new addition shows information about actions taken by the manual webspam team that directly affect that site’s ranking in Google’s search results.

This feature is available under “Search Traffic” tab in Google webmaster tool.

This new tool is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to increase communication with webmasters about spam and other issues affecting their sites.

Google Confirms Panda Update Is Rolling Out: This One Is More “Finely Targeted”

This morning, I noticed a possible Panda update was rolling out, one that seemed to be “softer” in nature than the previous updates, where many webmasters who were originally hit by the algorithm are now claiming recovery.
Google has confirmed a Panda update is rolling out and this specific update is “more finely targeted.”
As you may remember, Google told us new Panda algorithms are being pushed out monthly over a ten day period. Google’s Matt Cutts did imply there was a bit of a delay in pushing out their monthly Panda refresh because they wanted to release signals that would soften the algorithm a bit.
Google confirmed with us that a Panda update is being released and said:
In the last few days we’ve been pushing out a new Panda update that incorporates new signals so it can be more finely targeted.
This is despite Google telling us they are unlikely to confirm future Panda updates.
There does seem to be a wide number of SEOs and webmasters claiming recoveries here. I certainly hope you have recovered.
We are not exactly sure what number of Panda updates were up to, if I had name this one, I’d label it version 26.
