A mother climbs narrow lanes, carries her child downstairs, and starts another day of care.

For many families in Delhi's informal settlements, disability rehabilitation is not a weekly appointment. It is a daily journey shaped by inaccessible homes, limited services, and immense determination.

At ASTHA, our community teams walk alongside families to bring rehabilitation, inclusion, and hope closer to home.

What does inclusion really mean when disabled people are still pushed into institutions, segregated spaces, and systems that decide for them?

At Project Ability Empowerment, experts, lawyers, academics, and disability rights advocates from National Law Universities came together to discuss the implementation gaps within the RPwD Act, especially around deinstitutionalisation, autonomy, legal capacity, and the right to live within communities with dignity.

Because disability rights cannot stop at policy documents. They must reach homes, schools, streets, courts, and everyday life.

For many mothers of children with disabilities, a wheelchair is not sadness.
It is relief. Mobility. Possibility.

The joy of seeing your child move comfortably, go outside, attend school, play, and be included, that feeling is difficult to put into words.

Sometimes, what people call “wheelchair bound” is actually freedom for a child and their family.

Every child deserves comfort, dignity, movement, and inclusion, no matter where they live.

For generations, institutions have been treated as the default response for persons with disabilities in India.

But across two days under Project Ability Empowerment, persons with disabilities, care leavers, disability rights groups, legal experts, researchers, and came together to ask a different question:
What does dignity, choice, and community living truly look like?

The conversations were rooted in lived experience, from care leavers speaking about life inside institutions to disability advocates pushing for autonomy, accessibility, accountability, and stronger community-based alternatives.

One message echoed throughout:
Institutions cannot remain the default response.

The future must centre community living, relationships, support systems, and the right of every person to make choices about their own life.

At ASTHA's centre, children with disabilities are learning, exploring, and experiencing the joy of water play in an inclusive environment. As part of our summer activities, children engage in fun, sensory rich experiences that encourage learning, creativity, and social interaction. Through every splash and smile, they build confidence, develop new skills, and create happy memories together.

This summer, learning and laughter go hand in hand!

Some of the most important journeys we make are through narrow lanes, crowded homes, and communities often left unseen.

Every visit is about more than therapy or support. It is about showing up consistently for children with disabilities and their families, where they are, in the realities they live in.

From home visits and therapy support to inclusive education and community engagement, ASTHA continues to walk these lanes every day because inclusion cannot depend on convenience.
