Nijjar Killing Row: Escalating Violence and Intimidation Targeting Indian Diplomats in Canada, Says India's External Affairs Minister

In Canada, there was a climate of violence and an atmosphere of intimidation against Indian diplomats, said External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday in Washington.

"Because there is freedom of speech, to make threats and intimidate diplomats, I don't think that's acceptable," the minister said as quoted by Reuters.

The relations between India and Canada have been tense due to the presence of Khalistani terrorists in Canada who have kept alive the movement for Khalistanis or the demand for an independent Sikh state to be carved out of India.

Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian agents may have had a role in the June murder of Khalistan terrorist and Canadian citizen Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was labeled a "terrorist" by India.

However, India dismissed the allegations as absurd. Washington has urged India to cooperate with Canada in the murder probe. Jaishankar also held discussions with top US officials on Friday amid a brewing diplomatic crisis between India and Canada.

In 2018, PM Trudeau assured India that Canada would not support anyone trying to revive a separatist movement in India, while repeatedly saying that he respects the right to free speech and assembly of protesters to demonstrate, Reuters reports.

Canada is home to an influential Sikh community, and Indian leaders say some fringe groups there remain sympathetic to the cause of an independent Sikh state. The cause hardly has any support in India.

The demand for Khalistan has surfaced many times in India, most prominently during a violent insurgency in the 1980s and 1990s which paralyzed the state of Punjab for over a decade.

The insurgency killed tens of thousands of people and the Khalistan movement is considered a security threat by the Indian government. Sikh militants were blamed for the 1985 bombing of an Air India Boeing 747 flying from Canada to India in which all 329 people on board were killed.

Former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated in 1984 by two Sikh bodyguards after she allowed the storming of the holiest Sikh temple, aimed at flushing out Sikh separatists.

The Prevalence of Over 860 Serious Charges Against 194 MPs Prior to Elections | Instances of Over 20 MPs Facing Pending Charges Involving Crimes Against Women, Including Four Accused of R**e

Last week, both Houses of Parliament passed the Women’s Reservation Bill. During the debates preceding the Bill's passage, numerous MPs raised concerns about the presence of several members facing serious charges of crimes against women. Some MPs openly or indirectly referred to MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India, who is accused of s*xual harassment by women wrestlers. In June, the Delhi police filed a 1,000-page charge sheet, accusing Mr. Singh and former WFI staff member Virendra Tomar of offenses under Sections 354, 354A, and 354D of the Indian Penal Code, relating to assault, s*xual harassment, and stalking of women.

On September 20, during the discussion on the Bill in the Lok Sabha, Trinamool Congress MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar accused the BJP of not taking action against MPs accused of s*xual harassment, citing Mr. Singh's case. In both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, CPI MP Elamaram Kareem from Kerala and Trinamool Congress MP Derek O’Brien from West Bengal referenced the s*xual harassment case against the former WFI chief while critiquing the BJP. Trinamool MP Mausam Noor demanded accountability for the Lok Sabha MP involved, stating, “On behalf of the women of India, I want to know what he is still doing, sitting here in this new building.” In the Lok Sabha, Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal pointed out a minister in Haryana accused of s*xual assault enjoying cabinet rank status and shared data on the number of MPs with pending criminal cases.

According to the analysis by the Association of Democratic Reforms, out of 763 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs, 306 (40%) had criminal cases, and 194 (25%) had serious criminal cases pending against them when they submitted their affidavits. Serious criminal cases encompassed non-bailable offenses, murder, kidnapping, prevention of corruption, r**e, and other crimes against women. The analysis revealed that the farther to the right an MP leaned, the higher the number of serious charges against them. For instance, Bapu Rao Soyam, a BJP member from Telangana, had the highest count of serious charges at 55, followed by Dean Kuriakose of the Congress from Kerala with 37. In total, 860 serious charges were pending against the 194 MPs.

World's most profitable film: Made in Rs 6 lakh, earned Rs 800 crore; it's not Saw, Barbie, Kashmir Files, Kerala Story

In 2007, filmmaker Oren Peli wrote, shot, directed, and produced a low-budget horror film called Paranormal Activity. Following the example of the 1999 hit The Blair Witch Project, the film used a found footage format and was entirely filmed on amateur handheld cameras or CCTV. The film’s skeletal crew and cast of only four people kept the budget limited to $15,000 (Rs 6 lakh by 2007 exchange rate). After it was acquired by Paramount Pictures, the ending was changed and some post-production work was added, which took its total budget to $215,000 (Rs 90 lakh). The film was a sleeper hit, registering a monumental worldwide gross of $193 million (nearly Rs 800 crore). This gave it the highest budget-to-collection ratio in the history of cinema.
