Theresa May is expected to abandon a pledge to withdraw the UK from the European Convention on Human Rights, meaning that Britain will be bound by European human rights laws for another five years. Mrs May said last year she wanted to quit the ECHR, but there will be no mention of it in the Tory election manifesto as it would be a major distraction for her Government from the Brexit negotiations.

The Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry has warned that the world's biggest drug companies will abandon Britain unless an extra £20 billion a year is spent on the NHS. ABPI president Lisa Anson said that the financial squeeze on the NHS threatened the whole of Britain's £30 billion life sciences sector. She added that drug companies were “happy to discuss” tax rises to pay for more NHS spending.
