Knee pain while getting up from a chair?

Many patients feel pain when standing up from a chair, sofa, toilet seat, or car seat. This is not always just because of age.

I am Dr Mayur Rabhadiya, Knee Arthritis Specialist and Knee Replacement Surgeon in Mumbai.

When you get up from sitting, the knee joint suddenly takes more load. If the thigh muscles are weak, the knee cap joint is irritated, or early knee arthritis has started, pain can increase.

Common reasons include:

• Weak quadriceps muscles
• Early knee arthritis
• Knee cap joint pressure
• Stiffness after sitting
• Excess body weight
• Cartilage wear

Low chairs and sofas are usually more difficult because the knee has to lift the body from a deeper bent position.

Simple tips:

• Use a slightly higher chair
• Take hand support while standing
• Avoid sudden jerky movement
• Start guided thigh strengthening exercises

If this pain happens repeatedly, especially with stair pain, morning stiffness, swelling, or reduced walking distance, proper knee evaluation is important.

Knee pain is not only about painkillers. Muscle strength and joint protection matter.

Knee swelling after walking: normal or warning sign?

Many people ignore knee swelling after walking, assuming it is due to age or overuse. Mild tightness after unusual activity can happen, but repeated swelling should not be ignored.

I am Dr Mayur Rabhadiya, Knee Arthritis Specialist and Knee Replacement Surgeon in Mumbai.

Knee swelling after walking may be related to:

• Knee arthritis
• Cartilage irritation
• Meniscus-related problems
• Excess walking or overuse
• Weak muscles causing joint overload
• Inflammation inside the knee joint

You should be more careful if swelling is associated with:

• Pain
• Stiffness
• Reduced walking distance
• Knee locking
• Buckling or instability
• Pain while climbing stairs

The goal is not to keep walking despite pain.
The goal is to understand the correct amount of activity for your knee condition.

Why does knee pain often start after 40?

I am Dr Mayur Rabhadiya, Knee Arthritis Specialist and Knee Replacement Surgeon in Mumbai.

Many people assume knee pain after 40 is simply due to age. But in many cases, the actual reasons include:

• Sedentary lifestyle
• Early knee arthritis

This is why people begin noticing:
• Pain while climbing stairs

• Knee discomfort after activity

The important thing is this:

Not every knee pain means surgery.

Early diagnosis, strengthening, and lifestyle modification can help prevent progression.

Dr Mayur Rabhadiya explains whether rest or exercise is better for knee pain.

Many patients with knee pain or knee arthritis stop all activity because they think complete rest will heal the joint.

But in reality, excessive rest can sometimes worsen:
• Joint stiffness
• Muscle weakness
• Walking difficulty

In sudden swelling or acute pain:
• Temporary rest is helpful
• Ice and controlled movement are better

But in chronic knee arthritis:
• Controlled strengthening
• Mobility exercises
• Low-impact movement

are often more beneficial than complete inactivity.

The key is this:

Movement should help the joint — not irritate it.

Dr Mayur Rabhadiya explains whether cross-leg sitting and squatting are safe in knee pain.

Many patients with knee pain or knee arthritis ask whether sitting cross-legged, squatting, or floor sitting can damage the knee joint.

Deep squatting and cross-leg sitting increase pressure on: • The knee cap joint
• Cartilage surfaces
• Arthritic knees

In healthy knees or mild knee pain, occasional squatting may be tolerated.

But in knee arthritis: • Deep knee bending may worsen pain
• Stiffness can increase
• Joint irritation may worsen over time

The important point is this:

Do not force movements that increase knee pain.

Protecting the knee joint is more important than forcing flexibility.
