The 24-Hour Reversal

The ink on Tamil Nadu’s new government had barely dried when Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay made his first misstep. His administration appointed Rickey Radhan Pandit Vettrivel, a close confidant, TVK spokesperson, and astrologer, as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to the Chief Minister. The backlash was swift and came from all directions. Opposition parties, Left allies including CPI(M) and CPI leaders and even coalition partners questioned the decision, arguing it went against secular governance and scientific temper. For a government barely through its trust vote, it was an uncomfortable start.
What happened next is the more interesting story. The Vijay administration revoked the order in less than 24 hours. In Indian politics, that kind of speed is extraordinary. Chief ministers in this country have a long tradition of doubling down, deflecting or simply waiting out the noise until the news cycle moves on. Vijay did none of that. He read the room, acknowledged the error implicitly and acted. That is not weakness. That is a form of political maturity that most veteran leaders never develop.
There is a fair criticism to be made here. The appointment should never have happened in the first place. Questions were legitimately raised about why a personal astrologer needed a publicly funded OSD position when he could have simply continued advising the Chief Minister privately. In a state with the rationalist political legacy of Tamil Nadu, installing a numerologist in the Chief Minister’s Office, even briefly, carried a symbolism that stung.
But governance is a long game, and early course corrections matter. History is littered with leaders who confused stubbornness with strength and treated every acknowledgment of error as a threat to their authority. Vijay’s instinct to listen, recalibrate and move on cleanly suggests a leader more secure in himself than his detractors expected. Tamil Nadu’s voters did not just elect a film star. They elected someone who promised a different kind of politics. In this small but telling episode, Vijay has offered an early glimpse that he might actually mean it.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
