Government of Uttar Pradesh Approves Enhancement of Veterinary Internship Stipend
The Hon’ble Cabinet of the Government of UP, chaired by Hon’ble Chief Minister Office Uttar Pradesh Shri Yogi Adityanath Ji, in its meeting held today approved a significant and long-awaited measure for strengthening veterinary education and animal health services in the State by enhancing the internship stipend of Veterinary Graduate (BVSc & AH) students to ₹12,000 per month for a period of 12 months, bringing it at par with the stipend structure applicable to MBBS interns in Uttar Pradesh. The decision effectively represents a three-fold enhancement in internship support for veterinary students and marks an important milestone in strengthening veterinary education in the State.
The decision fulfills a long-pending demand of veterinary students and marks an important step towards ensuring greater parity, equity and recognition of the contribution made by veterinary graduates during their internship training.
Veterinary education in Uttar Pradesh is currently imparted through three State veterinary institutions, with approximately 100 students undergoing internship training in each institution every year, benefiting nearly 300 veterinary interns annually across the State. The revised stipend structure will directly benefit these students and provide meaningful financial support during their mandatory internship period.
Veterinary education is a rigorous professional programme involving five and a half years of academic training followed by a compulsory one-year full-time internship. During this period, interns actively participate in clinical services, disease surveillance, vaccination programmes, emergency care, laboratory work, field interventions and public health activities under the broader framework of the “One Health” approach. Veterinary interns contribute directly to strengthening the State’s animal health delivery system while gaining critical practical experience.
The revised stipend structure is expected to significantly enhance motivation and professional engagement among veterinary interns and further strengthen veterinary service delivery at the grassroots level. The measure is also expected to encourage greater interest in the veterinary profession and contribute towards the availability of a competent and motivated veterinary workforce. Given Uttar Pradesh's vast livestock population and the important contribution of animal husbandry to the rural economy, strengthening veterinary human resources is expected to have long-term benefits for livestock productivity, disease control and rural livelihoods.
This decision reflects the continued commitment of the Government of Uttar Pradesh under the leadership of Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath Ji towards student welfare, professional education and strengthening animal health systems, recognizing the critical role of veterinary professionals in ensuring animal health, food security, public health and economic prosperity.
The realization of this important decision also reflects sustained institutional efforts undertaken over the years. The proposal for enhancement of internship stipend was forwarded to the State administration through Uttar Pradesh Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Pashu Chikitsa Vigyan Vishwavidyalaya Evam Go-Anusandhan Sansthan (DUVASU), Mathura, the State’s only dedicated Veterinary University, and the matter was pursued continuously to highlight the legitimate concerns and welfare needs of veterinary students.
It is a matter of great satisfaction for the veterinary fraternity that this decision marks a historic milestone, realizing a long-cherished aspiration of veterinary students after nearly two decades, and reflects the Government’s sensitivity towards the legitimate needs and welfare of future veterinary professionals.
The Veterinary fraternity of Uttar Pradesh and DUVASU, Mathura expresses its sincere gratitude to Hon’ble Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Kuladhipati Smt. Anandiben Patel Ji, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Yogi Adityanath Ji, Hon’ble Minister of Animal Husbandry Shri Dharampal Singh Ji, and the Government administration for their guidance, support and commitment towards strengthening veterinary education and addressing a long-standing concern of veterinary students.

🌍 World Veterinary Day 2026 | Vice-Chacellor's Reflections
Today, as we observe World Veterinary Day, we are reminded that veterinary science is no longer confined to animal care alone. It sits at the heart of animal health, food safety, and food security — three pillars that define the resilience of our food systems and the well-being of our society.
The theme of this year’s World Veterinary Day brings this responsibility into sharp focus.
We often describe nutritional security through Availability, Accessibility, and Adequacy.
It is time we bring similar clarity to our policy thinking:
🔹 Food Safety must be driven by:
Assurance • Accountability • Awareness
— delivered through strong Standards • Systems • Surveillance
🔹 Animal Health Systems must evolve around:
Anticipation • Action • Adaptation
— anchored in Prevention • Protection • Preparedness
These are not just frameworks. They define how we design policies, build institutions, and deliver outcomes on the ground.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the One Health approach is no longer optional. It is fundamental.
From zoonotic diseases to antimicrobial resistance and climate stress, our responses must be integrated, data-driven, and future-ready.
India stands at a pivotal moment. With strong disease control programmes, growing digital capabilities, and a vast livestock ecosystem, we have the opportunity to lead — not only in ensuring safe and sustainable food systems, but also in shaping global veterinary discourse.
On this day, I acknowledge the dedication of veterinarians working across farms, laboratories, and field conditions — often unseen, yet indispensable.
Let us move forward with clarity, coherence, and commitment.
Because strengthening veterinary systems is not just about animals — it is about health, livelihoods, and national prosperity.
