For most of human history, the Moon has been a constant presence in the night sky. It lights our evenings, inspires stories and myths, and has guided travelers for thousands of years. Because it has always been there, many people assume that if the Moon suddenly disappeared, the only change would be darker nights.

The reality would be far more dramatic.

The Moon plays a crucial role in shaping life on Earth. Its gravity pulls on our oceans, creating the tides that affect coastlines, marine ecosystems, and countless species. If the Moon vanished, tides would immediately become much weaker. The Sun would still create some tidal movement, but it would be only a fraction of what we experience today.
