CHAYAM : A dwelling born from canvas, colour, and emotion — is shortlisted in Vanitha Veedu awards 2026✨
Grateful that a project rooted in art, earth, and lived experience has found its voice.
This is for spaces that feel, not just stand.

This residence exemplifies tropical modern design, merging contemporary form with climatic responsiveness. The bold sloping metal roof with extended overhangs ensures efficient rainwater runoff and passive shading a practical response to Kerala’s monsoon climate.

The use of earth-toned textured plaster harmonizes the structure with the surrounding red laterite soil, while white accent walls and glass openings provide contrast and visual balance. A triangular truss detail in red steel frames, clerestory windows, bringing in ample daylight and maintaining privacy.

Landscape integration plays a key role native plants, stone edging, and a reflective water body soften the built form and connect it to its lush green context. This combination of local materials, climate-aware design, and modern geometry creates a home that feels rooted yet forward-looking.

IN THE ART OF INTERIOR SPACE MAKING

COMPOSITION: The terracotta-toned tiled flooring sets a grounding base, echoing the natural hues of the soil outside. A monochrome rug introduces subtle patterns, adding texture without overwhelming the simplicity of the space. The bed, with its minimal black frame and wooden accents, adds to the raw yet refined aesthetic.

LIGHTING: The light fixtures hanging from the pitched ceiling add a touch of vintage charm with their glass textures and warm glow.

ARCHITECTURE DETAIL: The ceiling design deserves special mention—angled and clad in light wood, it creates visual interest and heightens the perception of space. Triangular transom windows near the ceiling bring in even more light, while exposed structural elements in red-brown hues harmonize with the earthy colour palette.

MOOD : A pop of colour enters the room through the abstract painting leaning casually against the wall. It provides a playful contrast to the neutral tones of the bedding and curtains, infusing the room with creative energy without disrupting its calm atmosphere.

Timber deck —
Elevated just enough to protect the root zone and reduce soil compaction,
Aligned to preserve the tree trunks and encourage natural drainage.A small detail, a big gesture.A simple timber deck, carefully nestled between trees , not to dominate, but to coexist. Thoughtfully raised to protect the ground below and designed to absorb the rhythms of rain and light.

An architect is a vastu shilpi—a sculptor of built form. How can we reclaim that creative role within the constraints of today’s market-driven profession?”
