The Government of India has enacted the Micro Small and Medium Enterprises development act on June 16, 2006. The act is popularly known as MSMED act 2006. Both manufacturing and service sectors have been included in the definition of MSME, apart from extending the scope to medium enterprises.
Ministry of Micro small & medium enterprises has implemented number of schemes, aimed at financial assistance, technology assistance and upgradation, infrastructure development, skill development and training and enhancing competitiveness and market assistance of MSME.
The flagship schemes are as below:-
1. PRIME MINISTER’S EMPLOYMENT GENERATION PROGRAMME (PMEGP)
2. CREDIT GUARANTEE SCHEME FOR MICRO & SMALL ENTERPRISES (CGTMSE)

A Joint Liability Group (JLG) is a group-lending model in Microfinance Industry. The idea revolves around shared responsibility—members of the group collectively guarantee the repayment of loans. If one member fails to repay, the others are obligated to cover the default, creating a system of mutual accountability. This model ensures credit access for individuals who lack formal credit history or collateral.
Group size typically consists of 4 to 10 members, depending on the financial institution's guidelines. Members should have similar socioeconomic conditions. A leader or representative is often chosen from the group to act as a liaison with the lending institution.
