Palindrome Magic and the Mystery of 196
You’ve probably heard words like “madam” or “racecar.” Read them forward or backward, they remain the same.
These are called palindromes.
But numbers can behave the same way. Let’s understand it mathematically:
Take a number, for example 57
Reverse it → 75
Add them → 57 + 75 = 132
Now repeat:
Reverse 132 → 231
Add → 132 + 231 = 363
Now 363 is a palindrome.
In fact, if you try this process with most two-digit numbers, you will eventually reach a palindrome. Even with many three-digit numbers, it works after a few steps.
However, there is a very mysterious number: 196
Mathematicians have applied the reverse-and-add process to 196 for a very large number of steps, but no palindrome has ever been found.
This is still an unsolved problem in mathematics.
