Our brightest Diwali wishes to you all from the RISE School 💛

We had a wonderful morning marking World Environment Day with our students and team - outdoors on green fields and under blue skies we planted seeds for a greener earth and our students made pledges for our Green School 💚

5 years ago on this day in 2020 the RISE School, like the rest of schools in India, was forced to close its doors in the wake of the devastating Covid-19 pandemic. Sadly our doors remained closed to face to face classes for two whole years.

Although we worked hard to provide online classes and a workbook delivery system to students without smartphones, it was a hugely challenging time for our students. 5 years on we know we have our work cut out to bridge the achievement gap created by this inexplicable disruption to our students’ learning.

We remain steadfast in our mission to address educational disadvantage in rural communities of West Bengal who are living below the poverty line. We are delighted to have launched a new curriculum this year for our 200 students, jam packed with innovative activities to stimulate learning and raise literacy.

Since RISE first piloted our Yearn to
Learn literacy programme in 2011:
* 96% of the children we work with are now literate.
* 91% of our students have passed their Higher Secondary (A-Level) exams.
* 87% have passed their Madhyamik (GCSE) exams.

RISE is passionate about raising the aspirations of young people in rural India. In 2025 we seek to empower students’ career opportunities through vocational skill development.

Our innovative ‘Yearn to Learn’ curriculum has benefited over 650 students who are first generation learners living below the poverty line, like Archana here. Families like Archana’s on average earn just £60 a month.

The RISE School works at grassroots level to provide free literacy classes for 10-18 years olds; we also invest our time in supporting families, running empowerment programmes and mentoring opportunities for the children.

RISE’s vision is that one day every child in rural India will be able to read and write. We believe that inspiring education can elevate life chances.

We have ambitious plans for 2025 and need your help to expand the RISE school’s provisions. These include:
1. Building a computer lab and widening the curriculum to include computing skills.
2. Enabling educational trips for children who have never left their village.
3. Employing a qualified counsellor to provide mental health support to the children.
