Common ground
Architectural Studio,
Calicut, Kerala, India
Common ground came into being in 2009, conceived as a collective environment that facilitates continuous research and experimentation on architecture. With studio based in Calicut, we have performed architecture, interior design, landscape design and master planning in India and UAE. Eluding categorization along stereotypical styles or types, common ground always prefers to be contextual, and harm

"How do you show light in your drawings?" is a question we have always pondered up on, and struggled with, in our practice. Some architects have an incredible hand for it. Here are a few stunning sketches that Ar. Jacob Cherian .manayath did, when he recently visited our Masjid An Noorayn, and we are in awe!

Lines of Light!
Designing in a tight urban plot, where there's no scope to borrow any view, the solution was an inward-looking home. "Lines of light" is an experiment with light and volumes to bring pieces of sky and garden and play of light indoors.

"The parallels between architecture and poetry- between designing and building on one side and writing on the other; the rootedness in nature that should anchor every breathing being to this world; the gut-wrenching melancholy of the finiteness of it all; the inspiring flourish of one's soaring through time - none of this can be captured in a randomised clinical trial. One writes, therefore. Not to call oneself a poet, not for the glory of it. But because there are a few things that may need to be said. And because someone might listen."
~ Jyotish Gopinathan
We are deeply honoured to share a heartfelt chapter in our journey! The beautiful book by our dear client-turned friend, is out; the collection of poems he wrote in response to the making of his dream home, 'Fern Hill'! He found poetry in every step of designing and building; and moments like these, are the ones that make us feel extremely proud of this profession that we are in!

We love it when clients soulfully express themselves and involve in the making of their homes. The doctor couple Jyotish Gopinathan and Kalpana George first approached us to do a simple residence in a 6.5 cents land as part of an already existing villa property, with minimum changes in the plan the builder provided and maximum adherence to their elevation. But as the design progressed, they fell so much in love with the process that, they evolved from wanting to "keep the marked garden areas" in builder's plan to purchasing an extra 6 cents adjoining land purely as an extension of landscape. And together, we made Fern Hill!
