"Dr B R Ambedkar refused to romanticise the farmer as a single, undifferentiated subject, as it carelessly bundled together both big landlords and small cultivators. His insistence on precision of language was political, about ensuring that policies designed to uplift farmers would not become tools in the hands of the landed elite.

Seventy-seven years later, his insights remain urgent. The figure of the “farmer” continues to be invoked in national politics, but Dr Ambedkar reminds us to ask—which farmer?
