A dominant male from the Brahmaputra floodplains!

Kaziranga has one of the highest tiger densities in India and has relatively decent sighting frequency. However, the majority of the sightings are either safari-path-crossings or far away in the grassland. But, we were extremely lucky during the season opener tour of 2024-25. During the tour, we could photograph tigers from a very close distance and on most of the occasions, the tigers were very relaxed.

This was one of those moments where photos, videos and the retelling of the story can never give the moment justice.

I’ve never felt so anxious to photograph a subject, as I knew it was a once in a lifetime encounter to be in the water alongside a white whale. My hands were actually shaking as I checked my camera settings for the 50th time before sliding into the water. It was a very dark and gloomy day with heavy rainfall. The water was almost black. This white humpback whale calf simply glowed as if she had her own light force. An incredibly challenging subject but a moment I’ll never forget.
