There are number of protocols for transfering data (basically input output status, machine operating parameters etc) from machine to iot server...do we really need so many?
Also, what do we really do with the data collected from machines? How often this data is collected? Why so often? Do we really know basis to answer these questions?

Let us democratize the Condition Based Maintenance ... of a simple but very widely used industrial agreegate ...the humble !
many talk about , to predict the life / recondition time for the humble electric motor. but as we all know AI, ML needs big data sets, experiance and knowhow to handle these data sets to arrive at an approximate life / maintenance for electric motor.
I would like to cbm or make automation simple! so that a simple logic also can give us approximate maintenance time for motor. After many discussions with experts and experianced technocracts, I could find out which are parameters needed to be monitored to do the cbm of electric motor.
These are:
Ambient temperature, motor housing temp, vibrations of motor, Motor frame size, Motor phase current, Age of the motor....
For more information, please feel free to contact me for more info regarding making of simple!

There is one very interesting case to do the condition monitoring of conveyor pully bearings. These big conveyor pullys are used in steel, cement plants etc and are having very high down time costs if bearings of these pullys go bad. The challange is that the rpm of thesecpullies is very low 10 to 15 rpm! bearing frequency of vibrations on these pullies is 5 to 10 hz and amplitude of vibrations is very low 1 to 2 mG ! So needs very special vibration sensors to monitor these!

Fundamentals of condition monitoring of machines ...almost of any kind:
the general health of the machine is represented by rms velocity generated by moving parts on the housing of the machine called V rms. This is represented in mm/sec. The healthy condition is ranging between 2mm/sec to 6 mm/sec for average mid size machines. This needs to be measured in frequency range of 10 to 1000 Hz.
For monitoring roller/ball bearing health in a machine, which generally causes maintenance downtime, we need to measure acceleration peak value (not velocity). This is measured in units milli G (fraction of acceleration due to gravity). For mid size machines, these should be bellow 500 milli G. Measured for frequencies above 1000 Hz. Bearing vibrations are at higher frequency, so we need to measure A peak for higher frequency.
By the way structural frequencies are usually very low like 0.2 to 2 Hz and structural fibrations are measured in velocity terms mm/sec.
The trend of vibration monitoring is shifting towards continuous measurements rather than periodic measurements..

Pressure as well as temperature are static parameters, where as flow is dynamic parameter. Pressure and temperature units does not contain any velocity or acceleration parameters, where as units for flow does contain velocity parameters. Pressure creates static force, where as flow creates work done. Energy is transfered by flow and not by pressure alone. For example high pressure oil must FLOW in or out of hydraulic cylinder to do some work. If cylinder does not move, no oil flows and no work is done! So, when ever we want to measure efficiency of hydraulic power pack, we must be able to measure flow of oil at high pressure. Measuring pressure alone does not give us all the true condition of power pack.
Crest factor is an important indicator of rolling element bearing failure initiation. It is a ratio of peak acceleration divided by rms acceleration for a particular frequency band. This frequency band is the range of frequency band in which ball pass frequency lie. In the beginning of bearing failure, crest factor rises as the peak acceleration increases but rms acceleration doss not rise as fast. As the bearing gets damaged further, peak acceleration remains same bur rms acceleration increases, so the crest factor reduces. The time interval between rise and fall of crest factor is generally depend on the application.it is approximately 2 weeks for electric motors bearinh operating 24x7, but could be 1 week for bigger MW sized gear boxes bearing failures. So, monitoring crest factor can predict rolling element bearing failure.....
Approximately 45% of machine failures can be Predicted just by monitoring the Trend of 2 operating parameters on the machine: Vibration and temperature..
