What is the pile cage?
It is a cylindrical arrangement of reinforcement bars consisting mainly of:
- Main longitudinal bars-- vertical bars running along the pile length.
- Circular links/spiral bars-- tied or welded around the main bars to hold them in position.
- Stiffener/ring bars-- sometimes provided to keep the cage rigid during lifting and lowering.
- Cover spacers-- attached to the cage to maintain the required concrete cover from the soil/bore wall.
Auguring in mini piling means drilling the ground using an auger (a rotating drilling tool) to create the borehole for the pile.
In mini-piling , caging means preparing and lowering the reinforcement steel cage inside the drilled pile bore before placing concrete.
So the overall mini-piling sequence is:
Soil investigation → Design → Setting out → Rig positioning → Drilling → Bore cleaning → Reinforcement → Concreting/grouting → Casing withdrawal → Pile curing → Pile head trimming → Pile cap → Column
Preliminary steps in mini-piling
1. Soil investigation
* A soil investigation is carried out first.
* Boreholes/SPT tests determine the soil strata, groundwater level and bearing capacity.
* From this, the structural/geotechnical engineer decides the pile diameter, length/depth and number of piles.
