Pookuttichathan Thira

Pookuttichathan is an ancient and powerful Theyyam/Thira deity worshipped in the northern Malabar region of Kerala. This sacred ritual is performed in kaavu (holy groves) and village temples, especially across Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kozhikode districts.

Revered as a fierce guardian spirit, Pookuttichathan is believed to be the protector of children and the destroyer of evil forces. His presence represents divine justice, safety, and spiritual protection. Through dramatic face painting, elaborate headgear, rhythmic drumming, and intense dance movements, the deity is believed to descend into the performer, blessing devotees and warding off negative energies.

Pookuttichathan Thira is not just a ritual—it is a living tradition that reflects the deep spiritual and cultural heritage of North Malabar. 🙏

Padaveeran Theyyam
